I bought a 72 steel crank 440 motor  out of a new yorker that has not run in 10+ years and the small freeze plug on the back of the head was rusted in half.i didn't see this till i got the motor home , i  pulled the head off that the freeze plug rusted  out of  yesterday and number 5 cylinder was full of water and  was corrroded and pitted. My question is do you think the block is cracked or could the head could have caused  this? I'm going to have the block checked next week .

Most likely the head gasket blew out by number 5. That is how the water got in the cylinder. Good to have it checked out, but my bet is the block is OK.

i sure hope so, by looking at the cyinder do you think a 30 or 40 bore will clean up up the walls?

This engine was in a car with no hood or air filter housing. The cylinders filled with rainwater and froze, the result was one broken cylinder wall. I don't know if it caused cracks as well.

If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is.

If the cylinder won't clean up at .030 just install a sleeve and build it.  :2thumbs:

My preferance is to bore them the least amount possible.....the thicker the walls the more structurally sound the block will be. Ring seal and overheating are issues that can result from thin cylinder walls. The best way to determine structural integrity is to have the block sonic checked. Ideally you want .200 wall thickness on the major thrust side of the casting.

i took it to the engine shop yesterday to have it checked to see if its cracked and he told me by looking at the  number five wall that 30 over would not clean the cylinder he said 60 might  or a sleeve.I won't know till next week if the block is good but if it needs a sleeve i'm not going to build it i'll just sell it and start over again. anyone running a 60 bore?

FLG

If your going to go 60 over have it sonic checked first. But if 60 over wont clean it up you have wasted the money on the sonic check and the boring so its your call  :shruggy:

Why not sleeve it?

I've built a couple of doz .060 blocks over the years and have not had one problem with any of them and none of them were hyd cam street engines. They all were serious street strip combos.I've built about 20 4.390 bore 440's and none of those have given any problem to date and they are all solid roller engines.
My 730 hp pump gas engine that's in the GTX at the moment is a 4.390 bore...idles in traffic and runs great...never goes over 180.

Ron's advice is right on.  Check out this article on sonic checking Mopar blocks:

The bottom line is you might have a thicker wall at 60 over on one engine than you would have with 30 over on another.  I called here in Chattanooga and they charge $85 to do the sonic check.  I looked up Sonic testing devices and they go on the low end for about a $1000.  So you probably don't want to buy one unless you were a shop or maybe a member of a club that wanted to share it.

a sleeve is only $100.  sleeve's, in some people's opinions, are better than original.  so take that for what it is worth.
