steering column ignition key mechanism, and a kill switch

Hey, at some point in the past a previous owner of my project '73se put a kill switch under the dash.  You have to use it to kill the car, and I think the reason is because the key mechanism on the column doesn't work properly.  Without the key in, you can turn it round and round in the forward direction.  With the key in, it can start just fun but will not shut down when you back up and remove the key.  There's where the kill switch comes in.

I've found replacement key mechanisms online, for pretty cheap.  Just wanted to ask here... do you guys think that's the root of my problem?  If I replace they key mechanism, should I then be able to get rid of the kill switch?

Just thinkin' out loud.  I'm going to replace the mechanism regardles, at some point.
