Oil pump and pan selection questions.....?

Hi folks... I've been searching the site for answers to the right oiling setup for my build....

440 +30thou, new pistons, stealth ported heads, 10.2 CR, street crusier, will be somewhere around 475 hp.

I bought a new standard melling oil pump. The old 402 oil pan is pretty banged up, and have been considering what to replace that with. Would my build benefit from a 6 quart hemi pan? If I do, is the standard melling pump sufficient or should I have a high volume to go with that?  I have not had the oil galleries opened up, searching the site, sounds like the standard pump would be fine for a street build like mine  :shruggy:

Key question is, am I wasting time and $$ getting a new hemi pan and pickup and HV pump, (a buddy has a good replacement 402 I could use).

Cheers,
Dunk  :popcrn:

Those Hemi pans are cheap and work well, I would add one for sure. I would also use the standard pump.

I would start with the standard oil pump, and switch it out if you have an oil pressure problem at idle, which is unlikely.

I prefer the bigger oil pan.  If you are running stock factory type bearing clearances, the 402 will be fine.  If you are >0.002" on your bearing clearances and running full groove mains, I would go with the bigger pan.

Thanks Gents, yes stock clearances Russ. My 402 pickup has an od of 5/8"... can only find info on 3/8 or 1/2"  :shruggy:  Standard melling works fine with the hemi pan too? Probably will replace it with another 402  :scratchchin:

You have a 3/8" pick-up.  3/8" pipe = 0.675"

.003" Vertical on the Mains with .0025" Vertical  on the Rods @ .016" to .018" side clearance is usually fine with the std volume pump/pan to around 5200 rpm, using 15W-40 Oil.
Any higher rpm, we default to a 6 qt hemi pan.
Remember,
pressure is "heat"... and the higher the rpm ? that is "heat" also... the only way bearings cool is the free flow of lifeblood Oil not just IN.... but back OUT again through side clearance for splash lube of other parts, thus allowing more Oil back in to cool the Brg.

Even wonder why some engines have very high Oil "temps" ?? which invariably means higher "running" water temps ?
too TIGHT !
GREAT Oil pressure..... even with a std pump.... but waaaay too tight ! and hot !
Only wimps wear Bowties !
