Oil pump drive/oil pump problem

Ok, I went to install the distributor and it wouldn't go all the way in. So I noticed that the pump drive didn't look to be all the way in, as well. I took off the oil pump and then the drive dropped in properly and the dist. fit as well. Now the problem is that the drive seems too long, aprox. 3/8 in. and the oil pump won't bolt to the block without pushing out the drive and dist. The drive part number is P3690876 and the oil pump is a high volume unit. gerry
I used to own a mopar because it was different, but now I know better.

rb and b parts in the mix? other than that, it seems unusual.

Remove the oil pump and see if the drive will go in. If not .. the bushing is messed up.

The pump is off now and the drive goes right in and looks right.

Now slide it in the bushing with the pump off. Does it go without the pump instaled?

If it's a big block your working on, don't forget that you need to seat the drive gear counter clockwise prior to setting in the distributor. Once the drive gear is in place the distributor should drop in.

with the pump off the drive goes right in and turns as it meshes with the cam gear, the distr. then fits in as well, however, the pump will not bolt onto the engine because the shaft of the pump drive appears 3/8 in. too long.

440 shaft in a 383-400?   Measure the hole at the end of the pump, compare to shaft length sticking out with pump removed. How does that look?

There is no diff in the B and RB drives.

CHECK the bushing ...it is probably not into the block fully.

The oil pump drive gear you have is for a roller cam application with the milidon external oiling system. The Milidon pumps with external oiling have a longer body with oil feed line attachments and that is why they require a longer drive.

So, if you are running a flat tappet cam the bronze gear is incorrect....you want a cast iron gear. If you are running a standard oiling system, even with an HV pump the shaft on your P3690876 will be too long.

For a flat tappet cam (solid/hydraulic) with std oiling you need P3571071

Yep forgot the longer shaft in the distributer for the deck height difference.  Sorry for the bad suggestion.    :shruggy:   Kyle

thanks everybody and firefighter, I have a roller cam in and I knew I needed a bronze geared drive. So now I need a drive that is stock length with a bronze gear.
