Installing Harmonic Balancer

I have this tool,

http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Great-Neck-Specialty-Tools-Harmonic-Balancer-Puller_W0QQitemZ330233509714QQihZ014QQcategoryZ20594QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247

And I want to use it to remove the balancer.  My question is how to I re-install the balancer.  When I did this job on a 57 Chevy we used the tool to remove it but had to end up using a hammer and a block of wood to reinstall the balancer/dampner.  Could somebody tell me the correct way to re-install the balancer on a 440?  Perhaps there is a specific tool for this job?  I can't seem to figure out how the remover tool I have will install the dampner as well.

Thanks,
Alex

You won't be able to use that tool to install the balancer.  I've had no problem installing them in the past.  I start it on by hand, then tighten the large bolt and washer that holds the balancer in place.   If you can't get the bolt started, then you may have to use a plastic or rubber mallet to force the balancer on a little further.  Torque the bolt to 135 ft. lbs.

I just put mine on, a crank and balancer from 440 source...really had to wack it with one of those plastic hamma's it was a very tight fit

I had the same problem.  Firefighter and Runner made their own tool out of a piece of 3/4 grade 8 threaded rod and a nut and washer to push the balancer on.  I could not find the proper threaded rod, but did find a harmonic balancer installation tool at a local tool shop.  Firefighter and Runner warned me about banging on the crank too hard, as there is a chance you could damage the thrust bearing in the process.  Bob

I just ordered a couple grade eight bolts in longer lengths and used the longest 'til I bottomed out, then switched to the next, repeat, until I had it all the way on.  I think I used three different ones if I remember correctly.

You might find that the threaded center for the puller in the OP is the same 3/4" thread as the crank snout; if it is, all you need is a hardware store nut and washer and you have an installer.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

How do you get that bolt to 135 lbs without spinning the crank instead?

Here are a few ways:
If the pan is off, use a wooden block against the counter weight of the crank.   If the pan is on, with the belt pulley off, insert bolts into 2 of the pulley holes and wedge a long bar between the 2 bolts and the frame of the car.   I purchased a tool on eBay which fastens to the the pulley holes in the damper damper and allows you to hold it with a breaker bar, while tightening the center bolt.

Lisle, Snappy, and others, all make a "Harmonic Balancer Installer Tool", that may be considered if you're doing lots ?

basically, as mentioned, it's just a case of getting a threaded shaft with a nut & washer to "push" the Balancer on.

i have always heated the part of the balancer that the crank slides into with a   propane torch  for a few minutes  , don't get it too hot  :yesnod:   i put  plenty of assembly lub on the front seal   as a precaution ,  not to damage it

Just a simple Question:  Is the Balancer Bolt Right or Left handed?  Considering the rotation direction of the engine and noting that the 2 drivers side wheels on the car have left handed lug nuts, I wondered.

Challenger340

Right Hand thread on Balancer bolts.

Yeah, weird !

Ma Mopar went to all the trouble to left hand thread the lugs nuts originally on their cars, I guess they didn't want the wheels to fall off ?
