Dont forget some of the older 12valve and 24valves had the 3.54 rear end. That will certainly help in the MPG department too.

I know everyone is trying to squeek all the MPG they can out of their diesel due to high prices  but all your MPG thats been posted are really nice numbers.   Try doing what you are doing with a gas engine and see how well your MPG is!

The early 89-90 3 speed automatic Cummins trucks even had 3.08 gears. I have always wondered what a 5 speed overdrive with those rear gears would get for fuel mileage.  :scratchchin:

727's is what they used. They got really good mpg.  They did however have problems with going fast on the highway with a load. Lots of people then started using the OD when they went to the 4speed OD automatic and thats the beginning of people blowing up trannys. 60-65mph was all they would do when loaded.

They are hard to find around here in Kansas. Lots of people dont turn loose of them as they are such good trucks.

i took in a 93 ram 1 ton in 2000 that had 578,000 on it,still ran like a top-guy just wanted a extended cab,and then he wished he had his old truck back,he got a 2001 1500,and never liked it as well, the 5.9 gaser was a fuel hog,and underpowered too

They had the 3.08's to offset the 3 speed 727. Once they went to the overdrive automatic the 3.08's were dropped. I have a 1991 with a manual 5 speed and 3.54's. If it had the 3.08 gears she would be quite a highway cruiser.

I always wondered what a gear venders added to those early trucks would do as far as just a highway unit.  The 5 speed was the better unit for pulling unless you overloaded them.  Our shopper had a bunch of 1st gen trucks a year or so ago. Like 6 of them for sale used and now you are lucky to see 1 every once in a while . Theres a guy with a 92 regular cab 2wd for 4grand  thats been in the shopper for 4 weeks now.
