Rear suspension workover [I need HELP!]

Alright, so I'm going over the rear end of my car now.

What I plan to do:

Pull the rear end assy., shocks, and springs.

Clean up the rear, switch the 2.91 open chunk for my 3.55 suregrip unit, replace brake hardware and if necessary, lines
Replace shocks (Monroes)
Replace springs (Mopar XHD)
Replace u bolts

Now, a few questions to start:

1) What suregrip additive are you guys using/ should I use, and where do I get it?
2) Where do I get the u-bolts?
3) Where do I get new wheel studs? I want RHT's all around . . . I realize that this and the u-bolts are probably parts store items but just making sure . .
4) My front drum brakes were all new when I took them off and switched them for discs. It had 10" drums all around. What from the front will switch to the back? What won't?

Also, any other input you guys have please share!

#1 - I think I'm using Mobil 1 75W-90 Synthetic and I believe it has all the necessary additives.

#3 wheel studs - I got mine at Napa and they had them in stock.

:iagree:  I did the same thing.

Terrible  One: I think the monroe shocks have been superseded at the optimum part - though factory correct they are the wrong color (white now/yellow originally if i remember correctly) anyhow,..  there was a thread some mos. back regarding this and i will attempt to find it and post it here...

Thanks guys about the oil and whatnot. So the Mobil 1 you speak of, I don't need to put the sure grip additive into? And the studs from the parts house are right hand, correct?

Strat,

I will definitely agree that the Monroe's are far from an optimum part, and you know I don't give a damn about the color! However, my wallet gets to choose, and so it is.  :'(

As for the Eldo . . .

Umm the engine is ready for me to put all the goodies for the top end on as well as the heads (which turned out beautiful and with high CFM's). The transmission is finally rebuilt with new everything, sitting there ready. The diff is at the machine shop where they were just hot tanking it to see how it was, haven't picked it up yet. I could go on forever about specifics but basically now all it lacks is the interior being put back in, the engine and tranny being mated together once a torque converter is found, and then it all being put in, then the wiring harnesses put in, and then all the little stuff. . . yeah, we all know how easy that is compared to how it sounds.  :brickwall:

Both cars should be on the road this summer, depending on my paychecks.

Alright, finally home from work and it's time for pictures! Woohoo!

The teardown went pretty well.

Here's what I have questions about:

1) What do the rear brake lines look like? Should I replace them or can they be cleaned up? If not, where can I find new hard lines for the rear?

2) (still) What brake components will swap from the front to the back? At a glance it looked like basically everything would, but I didn't see how the parking brake mechanism tied into it all.

3) How about shackles? Where to get, cheapest preferably. How do you like the ones I pulled off?!

4) Seals: I noticed of course the seal between the chunk and the housing, as well as the seals at the retainers. However, what about the plastic looking one inside the lips of the axle tubes? What are they, should I pull them out, should I replace them, etc.?

5) What about parking brake cables, meaning the ones that go into the plates on each side. . . where can I get them? Not sure if the one I have is reusable, but I'm missing the one from the other side anyways.

6) Bearings. . . the Timkens look fine to me. Is the general thing to do if they're alright to keep them? It sure would make things easier.

7) How's the old 2.76 chunk look? I figure I might as well keep it if I ever get the car dependable enough for a highway drive or something. Don't know how the wear patterns are supposed to be?

Sorry for all of the questions, but I'm going to learn!

Anyone? I've sourced the brake lines (1) and new shackles (3) but still don't know where to go about the seals and everything. Plus I'd like to know how to tell about the bearings. . .

NMike

get the green bearings and do away with the adjuster business.

the pattern in the pics look OK. 2.76 don't usually live a life of abuse.

Green bearings vs. tapered bearings debate aside, I am looking to spend as little money as I can. The cost of new bearings plus having the old ones pressed off and the new ones on is something that I'd like to steer clear of if the Timkens on there are okay . . .
