Dual Quads

OK, Here's my question.....

I am thinking of running dual quads on my 440. What are the best carbs for this set-up? I will be using Edelbrock heads, TTI headers & exhaust, MSD/Mallory Ign. system.  I will be using a 4-speed [5-speed when the budget allows] and a Dana 60 w/3:54 Gears.  I am building  the car [ a 70' R/T] as a Street/Roadracer car. I am planing on making many chassis mods to match the performance of the drivetrain. Anyway, back to the question.....What carbs & camshaft combo would work well with this package? Or would I just be better off using a fuel injection set-up?

Any and all suggestions are welcome. :yesnod:

 My 2 cents.

Dual quads is pretty much passay (spell check) in other word's pretty much a waste of money. Current steet Hemis come with a single 4 barrel intake.

If looking for ET, look at better intake and better carb. If you are looking for the look. All I can say is 6-Pack baby! Wih good tuning and right carb and intake single 4 barrel will still make more power. But there is something a bout 3 holley's in a row that will make most people shut the F--k up, they know you are packing.

6-pack will give you better off the line and better MPG and still have shock apell.

Go with Maxie heads and the Rat Roster intake from a Maxie, now that is real wood! :icon_smile_big: God I miss my Maxie. Poop the hood of the Runner and no one wanted to play INC Bow Tie Guys with huffers. Had a Stanger with a Shot gun 429 giving me some s--t and wanted to play. Pooped my hood on the Runner, said "I never thought I see that" and walked away. :icon_smile_big:

Get a 6-pack. Hum, seems I need a nother one as well ;D

not enough info to help you pick a cam
I tend to agree with Ken a single HP series or Demon carb & a good intake will out perform any dual quad .. which engine BTW?

Not to mention the enormous tuning headaches associated with multi carb setups.

Low, if you are going to road race I would look at EFI for the 440. I think Defiant is the member that is doing EFI to his 440. On high G's in a turn, carb can be straved for gas.

Single carb is definately the way to go....much easier to tune and usually more power, all things being equal. I do like 6-packs though.

I wonder why then, that they ever bothered with dual quads in the first place?  Surely even back in the dinosaur days when street hemi's roamed the earth they could have figured this out...

Myk, that easy, back in tbe 50's and mid to late 60's they where the hot setup's. But couple thing's happen. First they started to make big and better carbs, mainly better. Then more and more work was done to make a single 4 barrels intakes better. Not a big NASCAR fan, but I am 90% sure in 68 all you could run was single 4 barrel. That more than likey what really got them moiving R & D on the intakes and carbs.

I have a 950 3 bbl carb from the late 60s which is basically the biggest cfm you could make a single Holley [4bbl] carb until the Dominator series carbs were invented  in 69/70

i read an old magazine article a few nights ago that said they lost a lot of power by using dual quads ona street motor.granted it would look really cool, but id take the advice of the pros here and stick with one 4 bbl,it will make life easier

Thanks for the input guys. If not EFI, Sounds like a Big single 4bbl w/ electric fuel pump. I'm going to use a 440 bored .030 over. I Haven't researched what pistons/rings to use. My brother used Keith Black pistons in his 440, but he's more into Drag Racing. Any sugestions? Keep the comments coming. I haven't built a car in years. I have a lot of catching up to do.!! :icon_smile_shock:

Neil does not like K B pistons so neither do I. ;D

Neil, I have a 1130 CFM Holley 3 barrel. Pretty much junk, would kill anything under 5000 RPM's off the line.

Weren't those some kind of experiment in Trans-Am racing?

Chryco Psycho

yeah they were an experimently carb just to max flow through a standard sized Holley body , they are not common for sure , I doubt they were made for very long but mine works great
