Anyone fabricate roll around stands for there Charger body?

I was thinking some of these stands would be helpful to bolt to the frame so I can roll the car around while doing body work.  Would also need to utilize these when transporting my car for paint.  Has anyone made these?  Got any designs or patterns?  Thanks  Matt

While I am on this subject has anyone made nice roll around stands for your engine or K-member?

I've done some of that.  I ended up making a set of bolt-on "axles" for the front & rear ends of a B-body. 


For the front end, see if you can find someone with a suitable B-body size K-frame that's not worth anything.  (A bolt hole is torn out somewhere, it's built with slant-6 motor mounts, etc.)  Get the biggest/strongest inflatable swivel-style caster wheels you can buy and weld them onto the K-frame with some square tubing.  You may wanna put the caster wheels far enough out at the sides so that the setup can be rolled up trailer ramps. 


For the rear end, I ended up just buying a pair of replacement horse-trailer hub assemblies for about $100 total.  They had spindles that slide into a chunk of 2"-inner diameter tubing and weld into place.  So I got a chunk of tubing with the right 2.0-inch inner diameter (and about 2.375" OD in total), and used some normal 2.5" U-bolts to clamp it onto a set of worn out leaf springs.   Weld on some spring perches, get some U-bolt lower plates, and you're in business.  A "dummy" rear axle that goes right onto the normal leaf springs. 


You could argue that it would be better to just get a real Mopar rear axle if it's gonna be that much work in the back.  But on the other hand, this thing is very compact & lightweight in comparison.  (I can pick it up & carry it around by hand like it was a driveshaft.)  And it has brand new heavy-duty wheel bearings/bolt flanges.  And the fact that it can't ever be made to work as a real Mopar's axle . . . that also means I'm never gonna be temped to pirate it for a project car.

Mike, thanks for the info.  Do you have any pics of your set-up?  I have a K-frame that has a bit of damage to it.  I could probably use that.

Here you go , 2 inch square tube, I made it adjustable up and down 7 inches. Note the Truss I made from re-bar and angle for stanchions , this keep the length of square tube from flexing

Here's a couple that are cheap to make with some square stock/ angle drilled to the bumper bracket width and a caster of your choice on the bottom.  Connect both sides together to avoid frame flexing, especially during transport!!!!!!!

Rolls OK on to the flat trailer.   Did the same thing for the rear off the spring front perches.  http://www.hotrodrefinishers.com/1969_charger.htm

my stands were mahe out of plate square tubing and rollers. front was mounted to the bumper bracket mounting holes   and the rear was mounted to the rear leaf springs front mounting piont. the rear is two legs with rollers that way all areas of the car can be reached with ease and the front is two legs with a cross bar for support those roller also swival. If I had it to do over again there would be a support on the rear legs all the rollers would swival and lock I think my stand cost about $200 total if I wasnt still using it Id sell it to you

Yeah I will probably use swivels on all corners.  There isn't much room in my garage so that would make it a lot easier to manuever the car around.

yeah same here but my buddy's dad did the metal work for me he is a professional car restorer (huge shop lots of room) I want to finish the body work and paint it myself (In my small shop not a lot of room)

Yeah, you must be pretty tall    Anyone know how much the bare shell of a 2nd gen weighs?

tall yes.  Has an advantage of allowing for easier access to the undercarriage but makes it difficult to access areas like the interior. I borrowed them.  It looked really strange when I dragged the car this way
