I saved a old post with this subject

RWL Goodyear Polyglas - date code?

I have an original RWL 'Polglas F70-14' I've used for a '70 E-body spare since the mid 1980s. It has a code 'MELD Y4A493' on the backside. Does this code say anything about the date of manufacture, or anything else? If not, is it elsewhere on the tire? Thanks!

Y4A493
493 is the date code. Made the 49th week of probably 73 as I don't think polyglass tires were still made in 83 but I doubt it.

This tire is perfect !!! It was tucked in a corner of a garage for 40 years , still had air in it ! Just a little !!

I have the original to mine which I would just as soon get rid of since I can't actually use it anyway. Are these old spares worth anything?

I don't remember what tire & size, but in the Winged Warriors, National B-Body newsletter, someone was advertising an entire set of 4 for the bargain price $10K for several months.   :o

Whatever car I had owned throughout the years, any bias-ply POS was yanked & swapped for a set of steel belted radials. If it had decent tread, I saved it as a spare. If it was bald but held air, it went on any car I scrapped so it could be moved or towed. If you ever drove a car with bias ply tires on it, you'd understand why they're much better tied to ropes to be used as swings for kids than on your car to drive it.

I understand that people who want their cars kept, or restored as original & stock want them, but not me. If I had a nice tire or a nice set, I'd sell it.

Hey Cupcake , I'm running  275-60-15 T/A's , thought I would use it for a spare

:scratchchin: Think I've seen those one advertised in the WW newsletter. Very nice origional set of tires.

Now if it was for my car, and I was going for a top notch restoration, you bet I'd be after a set of date coded tires for my car. I'm picky like that I guess. For now though, I"m POOR so can't do what I really want to with my car. Which is why it remains in its current state, and continues to be DRIVEN.

Really? So if you made $39,000 in a year you'd just throw your money away? Not exactly a lot of disposible income on what I make. But I make ends meet, and I also find time to do what I like. Which is these cars.
