Ken, is the broom stick test your refering to for hearing a noise in the engine? If it is, then this is similar to what the pump mechanics do at work. They use any long screwdriver, place the tip on the metal surface of the engine in various locations. You have to press your ear tightly against the screwdriver handle and listen very carefully. You will be able to hear what is going on inside the engine directly below the area where the screwdriver. The pump mechanics tell me that this is a very good way to find out where a ticking or rattle is coming from. Good luck bud, I hope this helps.

using a metal rod / socket extension works great for locating noise , pulling spark plug wires while running the engine may locate a dead or low cyl as well
