I am working on a customer car right now that had quarters brazed on over the old rotting panels and than a 1/2 of mud through out.......Who ever did it seem to be more sculpter than bodyman.

man, the EXACT same was done to my Charger! All of these brazed-on patches and bondo!

Pretty typical repair from the 70's and 80's.......that was pre-MIG welder since torches were much easier to afford for the average back yard bodyman.

If you are referring to the link to the article on Unique Performance, I hear ya. What kills me though is the fact that a company like that actually thought they would get away with such crap. I mean we are not talking about a HLPAG here. This is suppose to be a top shelf company with ties to big names like Shelby and Foose. The money and resources they had really makes me wonder why they wouldn't do it right. I know, i know, GREED is the first thing that comes to mind.

Don't fell bad about the bondo, most of are car's were full of it. just replace it with all new sheet metal and forget about it.

How many gallons of bondo go into even a proper repair? i seem to remember a debate a while back on here where a couple of guys who really knew their stuff threw out some numbers that most of us would say "holy $hit" maybe 7-8 gallons on an average car where it was only being used to fill imperfections, not huge dents.  not real sure of the numbers, but definately more than what you would think.  didn't make 13 gallons seem that out of whack.

If we are still talking about the linked article above regarding Unique. I think when you are paying that kind of money for cars of that magnitude more than a gallon or 2 for small imperfections should not be acceptable. Again we are talking about low production here not one off.  Granted they have what appears to be a fair bit of custom work on the body I am sure the investment in tooling up some dies and molds would have been a more professional approach than grafting them on with bondo. I also can see the need for a fair bit of panel replacement since I am sure they are  starting with a rough car to begin with. However, I still can't see the need for more than a few gallons at most.

Most Body Shops today are Bondo Shops . Some can replace panels . I don't think anyone knows how to hammer and dolly . I am amazed at some of the cars I see at shows that are Puttymobiles. I think the art of true Body work is dead . In the mechanical field everything is remove and replace . Nothing is rebuilt anymore and I think that has trickled over to the Body field .

dkn1997, You may be thinking of me. If you got a very straight car with only a couple of door dings to fix you wont need much bondo. But if you got a very wavy car with a couple of door dings then your going to have to skim coat the car with bondo to get the waves out & get straight. If not then lots of extra Priming & blocking or your the type to just ship wavy cars & not care. Even brand new factory cars have waves. Why do you think we had to skim coat brand new cars at Masco -tech (MSX)with zero miles with 5+ gallons of bondo & prime a Block to get straight before going to a turn table at Detroit Autoshow. Did you ever see all that Bondo Boyd or Chip used on those cars on tv, Sure looked like 10 gallons to me. If you ever had to skim coat a car then you know what I mean, If not you wont understand. Anybody ever see what happens after 20 years of Mechanics pulling Motors & leaning over your Fenders on your Mopars, You get what they call elbow dents on top of your fenders, Sometimes 20-30 of them little dents, I gotta bondo coat almost the top of every Mopar fender because of this. Your not going to lead these or block them out in primer. LEON.
