This has probably been talked about before but,  :shruggy:

What is the best way to remove and replace an entire roof?  just the skin and A-pillars  :shruggy:

tan top

depends on how bad the roof inner frame is but if it were me  i would  replace just the skin , unpick all the factory welds .

inner roof is great. its just bad around the top of rear window. and was just going to replace the whole thing instead of trying to weld a patch in,( concerned about warpage since the roof is so thin)

1 remove all of the seam sealer from the entire perimeter of the roof skin.

2 grind or drill all of the spot welds (and stitch welds on sail panel seam) from the top side of the roof you are removing.

3 pop all of the welds with a small hammer and a gasket scraper or wide screwdriver or some tool similar, until the roof skin is off.if some of the welds are stubborn don't be afraid to grind or dill them a little more but try not to get too deep.

4 grind remaining welds or burrs etc from the mating surface, make this surface VERY clean as it will weld much nicer if you do.

5 follow all of the same steps to get the replacement roof skin off the donor chunk EXCEPT drill or grind the welds from the opesite side

6 when you have the replacement skin ready, fit it on, if it fits good clamp it down with as many vice grips as you can

7 weld it on (either spot weld or wire weld) if you are going to wire weld, drill holes where the welds need to go ,and fill them with weld, making sure to get penetration but not too hot where you cause warpage (cool each weld with compressed air or a wet rag before moving to the next and move around the panel as you go so you dont have a trail of heat)

8 grind welds

9 prime bare metal (epoxy or self etch)

10 re seam seal

11 body work

12 paint etc

Your out of your mind !!! I installed an entire roof skin on my car only because it had a Vinyl top and it was rusted everywhere . Just male what you you need , flange , weld-through primer , then weld in . Why in the world would you make more work for yourself ???

because the right way to do something isnt always the easiest!! thats why Captain Cupcake . :slap:

Besides in this case , I would say taking it at the factory seams would be easier than all that flanging and whatnot.
