For those of you who use #2 heating oil to heat your home, what's the price in your area. I am sure its not a record but I just paid $3.30 a gallon today. Damn stuff is going up by the day :flame:

I have gas heat so I dont worry about that and supposedly gas heating prices went down locally. Im surprised they're not charging us for air... wait, they can't know about this or they will start doing it.

bought 500 gallons back in july at $2.59. I use the pellet stove every day which cuts down on my heat bill. Im paying $229 a ton for pellets and use 40 pounds a day. Someday i would love to have geothermal heating or better yet move south.

We gave up on that long ago. We have a wood burning stove in the basement that heats the whole house. :2thumbs:

Same here ! Two wood stoves in the house, one in the shop and 45 acres of trees makes for cheap heat and a lot of exercise. :yesnod: :yesnod:  I do have electric heat for back up, but rarely turn it on.   Bob

I burn wood as well.
We have natural gas & it is insane $.
With the wood burner we can leave the heat on 60, for hot water, and feel toasty with the logs burning.
The Amish folk here in NE, Ohio sell a truck load of split wood for $25, all you can fit into yout truck. I make a few trips in the Summer & about 4 for the Winter. :2thumbs:

Problem here is its an OLD FARM HOUSE  and some of you might fully understand the term, the chimney  couldn't handle a wood stove  it needs a new chimney.  If we do that the house needs to be realigned as it is on a stone foundation.  Its kind of like restoring a Charger, one thing leads to another and where do you stop. If the real estate market hadn't gone to hell I would have sold it to  a young couple with horses and  the ambition to do what the place needs and retire. Maybe next year,   Al

You do not have to put a wood burner in the chimney, allthough many do.
All you do is find an outside wall and cut a hole and run the pipe out & up & ba da bing, nice wood heat. :Twocents:

I live in a 100 year old farmhouse also but I have put in new windows, siding, and insulation which help out. My Big Jack woodburner is tied into my house ductwork so the entire house gets heat. The woodburner goes into a chimney that is clay lined masonry block and is a lot newer than the house. I have a high efficiency LP furnace in case I am not around to fill the woodburner. The LP furnace uses seperate PVC exhaust venting so there are no problems with the insurance company either.

If your chimney is in bad shape my father in law has a house that is well over 100 years old. He had his original brick chimney re-lined 20 years ago by a company that used some sort of slip form that is filled in around. He has not had any problems with it after two decades of wood burning.

The best part is that I used about 750 gallons of LP last year keeping the house at 60 except when I got home from work until bedtime. Now I keep it between 70-75 and wake up to a warm house in the morning. So far I haven't used any LP this year and the wood heat is much warmer feeling too. :2thumbs:

I used to burn coal. That was great. My family room, in the dead on winter was 80 and the rest of the house was 70. Back then coal was $179/ton. I went through 2 tons a year.

you are right about that, cut it ,split it stack it move it down cellar and take out the ash it warms you a few times. Its a second job but at $3.40 a gallon its worth it

You are right about that, the wood burning is a job. You have to start getting stocked up in Spring for the upcoming Winter. :rotz: :yesnod:
