OK I will be getting my charger back next week from the blasters. After I blow all the sand out of it the metal ready instrutions reads to wash the metal  with water is this OK? It just seems strange to get the car wet and have water get in the seems. Is this how it's done or it there a better way?

daytonalo

You lost me , if it is blasted why would you wash it ???? Prep-sol  only before epoxy primer !!!

700jfm

That's what i will be using epoxy primer with metal ready prep. the instrutions on the metal ready reads to wash it off with water after applying.

daytonalo

Metal prep as in acid wash ??? Why would you need that ??? You just had it sandblasted , you only need a wax and grease remover . I think you should take the car to a body shop , it only gets more complex from here on out !!!

I'm just going by what the paint suppler told me to do.

Hey daytonalo you're right, I don't know a lot about painting but I'm not going to let that stop me. That's why I join this forum so I can learn, ask questions and read what others have done. You posted today that you don't talk down to others about their skills, but I think that's just what you did to me. I may not know each step or the right way to do everything, but I thought if I had questions that was what this was about. The man at PPG Automotive told me I needed the DX520 Metal Conditioner and DX579 Metal Cleaner- he knew the car was sandblasted.  I do try to read and follow instuctions but it was confusing to me, which is why I asked.   If I get it wrong, I guess I will know better next time.

To me, the only stupid question is the UNASKED one that you need an informed answer to. Go by what your paint salesman tells you. You're never gonna learn to DO anything if you don't DO it. It seems like some people were born knowing everything.  :D

yes you wash it off with water but you dry if off also and you don't just let water sit there on bare metal.

I went thru this with my charger. If you have the car blasted the only prep you should need is wax&grease remover. I believe the metal ready
or any other metal prep is used on bare (read not media blasted) metal. I blasted my car and used a metal prep. When I washed it off the
metal started to rust instantly. So I had to blast it again to get rid of the flash rust. Cleaned with wax & grease remover and sprayed epoxy
primer. This was over a year ago and epoxy primer still holding up fine. Just my experience. Hope this helps a bit.
