They all say that they are real, but me and my son don't believe it. What do you guys think? I just saw the newest one where they drive the truck through a double gauntlet of two big steel I beams. Kinda looked to us like the first beam hit the truck a little :D

Real or not, If I tow 10000 pounds on a regular basis, even semi regular, I AIN'T buying no half ton truck, I'm getting a Cummins Diesel DUALLY!

As far as the I-beams, I can HONESTLY say, I really have NEVER had that happen and most likely, strangely enough, never will.

And lastly, I ain't buying a Tundra, have you looked that thing, It's ugly enough to make a Pit Bull climb a Plate glass window!

That HAS to be the ugliest truck I have EVER seen, doesn't help that the engine they rave about has a NASTY habit of eating camshafts, which makes replacing the engine necessary!

NAH I'll keep my Ram.

I pulled into the gas station with my 68 the other day and there was a new tundra there and a couple guys and a chick dressed up with Toyota shirts on standing by it.  They would walk over to people pumping gas and ask them if they like the tundra and if they would consider buying one.  The one guy comes up to me as I'm filling up my Charger and he looks at the Charger then looks at me and kind of hesistates and then says, hey what you think of the Toyota tundra pickup?  I said to him as I look at the charger, I'm a dodge man.  He says, I can see that, and then we talk about the Charger.  Then he walks off.

Even if it were the best looking, most powerful, most reliable truck on the planet you'd still disparage it just because it's made by Toyota. ;) Dodge appears to be king of the truck market but even they will admit the Nissan Titan and Toyota Tundra have them worried and have put a dent in sales. The Tundra matches up pretty well in the half ton market - and none of them are truly half ton trucks any more.

As for the commercials, I had a roommate that was a cameraman and went on a lot of car commercial shoots. He had stories about most of them. The best was where they had to dig 90% of the way through a snow bank so the Chevy truck could "bust through" after it got stuck on several previous attempts. I'd be willing to bet that most people who purchase the Tundra (or any half ton for that matter) will rarely haul anything and when they do it won't come close to 10,000 pounds. It's a way to get people's attention in a commercial. That's all.

I'm really not a fan of the looks either but I can say that for a large percentage of new vehicles. Of course, I won't buy a brand new truck any way since I can't justify $30-45k for something that I really only need to tow with - and then get stuck driving it every day. I'd rather have a used one that sits 90% of the time and something else to drive on my 28 miles commute.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

I really have nothing bad to say about the Tundra.  A friend of mine has a Tundra and trailered my Charger with it 57 miles.  It was actually decent.  I don't think my Dakota could have done the same thing

I don't buy the story they're selling in those commercials.

If that trailer can start dragging the truck backwards with the brakes on, no amount of standing on the brake pedal is going to make it stop.
The effect of equilibrium comes into play when the initial jerk of the trailer being dropped is complete. Then the weight of the truck and the weight of the trailer even out over the simple machine created by the gear that ties the two together. It's basic physics and they figured it all out ahead of time.
So, what you see could certainly be done, but it's all figured out and you could do it with any vehicle as long as you used the same formulae.
As for the pull, is there enough torque in a Tundra to pull a trailer that size? I'm not sure. The trailer is suspended in air (no discernable friction) and that simple machine is still part of the equation. I can't say how much that gear is helping, but it doesn't reduce the friction. However, the bearings need to be engineered to overcome the force of the friction in order to move at all - so they make the task easier. Whatever the coefficient of friction is for the cable and pulley - as well as the effect of the bearings and anything else in there is going to determine the amount of force needed to overcome the force of static friction that is holding the whole mess in equilibrium.
All of that could be engineered to be easy, difficult or neutral in effect to the stunt.

As for the braking under load, they don't seem to mention if the trailer has brakes or not - judging by how it doesn't jack knife, I'd have to say the trailer does have brakes and they were helping just a little bit. :P

The acceleration commercial and the braking-before-flying-off-the-cliff? I don't know. I've got nothing against that one except for the possibility of clever editing, but I've got nothing to support that argument either.

Know what?

That thing is STILL Bowling shoe UGLY   :D :D Ugly goes all the way to the BONE! Ya can't HIDE it!

I've had SIX Dodge trucks, 2 Dakotas, and FOUR Rams (94, 97, 86 and my current 04.) The reason I have had so many, is they have ALL been great trucks, can't fault them at all.  That is the reason I own Dodge trucks now.

The fact is , I really don't like the yoyotas and most likely I never would own one.

Besides, that thing is UGLY U-G-L-Y!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK I feel better now!  :poke:
