Cam question out of curiosity

This question came to mind reading Cudakens Cam/Lifter question. But, The engine was totally gone thru in my car, except for the rings, main bearings(both looked great yet), lifters, and cam, everything was replaced with new items. So is it okay to install a street/strip cam along with new lifters as is?

Yes the cam can be upgraded to something "warmer" but you need to size it accordingly to match the rest of the car....specificly rear end gearing and stall speed. Depending on the grind you might have to upgrade the valvesprings with a cam swap.

and i wouldn't go with to large of a cam with out knowing what the compression of the engine is.

as mentioned before convertors and gears are a big role in performance along with the kind of rpm range your intake, carb and exhaust can do. try and keep everything matched and it will be a good combo.

it is real easy to over cam an engine and get very poor results in the end.

For the next few years, I just plan on running the stock '72 400ci. with a 750 edelbrock, edel. proformer 383 intake, windage tray, TTI Headers Ceramic Coating with Thermal Barrier inside, 2-1/2" dual exhaust with X pipe, Dynomax 17748 Super Turbo Mufflers & stock converter, 727 trans. stock open rear end(2.73s I believe). For a cam, Engle K54 is what I'd like to run. Although, someone suggested to put in a purple shaft .509 cam though.  I want that lumpy sound too cause it is just plain cool :icon_smile_big:

You don't want a 509 cam in that Charger, it will dog your Charger big time. Will scare the Chevy out of them at the light but better hope they don't want to play. You will be Road Kill.

God I typed this 30 times but I like the 74 400 Police converter. Gives you a 2400 stall and if you can find a trans supply house (sells to trans shops) should be able to get one for around $50.00 to $75.00. Have one in my 69 Charger with the counter weight knocked off (you don't want to do that) and 2.76 sure grip. Made my Charger feel 500 pound's lighter. After I installed the converter I could get rubber on a 10 MPH roll with the 2.76's.
