Disc Brake Upgrade Problems....

Hello again!

Hope someone can help me with the problem that I am having with upgrading my 68 Charger R/T to disc brake.  The car is originally a drum brakes that the previous owner changed over to power drum brakes.  Here is where the problem is, I put disc brakes from a 76 Dart and wanted to put the car back to non-power brake system.  A friend told me that the best master cylinder to use is one from a 73-76 Dart.  The problem comes with the brake pedal push rod.  The one that was on the car is the top picture.  Looks like it needed to be smaller with power brakes so someone (NOTE ME) got very creative with a welder.  The bottom push rod is what came with the new master cylinder but appears to be too long.  I installed the master cylinder with the bottom push rod and I couldn't get any brake pedal.  It looks like the rod it too long????   Can someone tell me what the standard brake pedal rod length is?  Where can I get one?  Any help would be appreciative!

Thanks!

Eric

The three incher is way to small.  I think it should be like 6 3/4.  I just ordered this today and should fix the problem.

All,

Let me just say that the Mopar part mentioned above didn't work and be ware when purchasing one.  The bolt that came with it was too big to even fit in the hole of the push rod! :flame: :flame:  I was unable to find anywhere on the web what the length of the pushrod was fully closed or opened.  Just so everyone knows it is 8 inches fully closed.  If you need a long pushrod this is the part for you after drilling out the eye hole for the big bolt.  I ended up going to Magnum Force (http://www.magnumforce.com/index2.htm ) and they have a push rod that is used for Wilwood brakes systems that worked great!  It was only $17 instead of the Mopar part which was a whopping $64!

On to the next problem, has anyone run into this before?  After bench bleeding the master cylinder I install it on the car and all is well.  Once I start bleeding the brake system the brake pedal gets lighter and lighter and never gets solid like it should.  Like the brake system is losing pressure.  I don't see any leaks or obvious problems.  Any ideas????

Parts list:
Disc brake from a 76 Dart
Master cylinder 73-75 Dart (non power disc brake)

Can you "bench bleed" the master cyl in the car? That should help determine whether it is the master cyl or not.

I have done both bleeding the master cylinder in the car and on the bench.  That is fine but once on the car I bleed the back brakes and all if fine.  Once I get to the front the pedal disappears and will not pump up.  I don't see any leaks.....  I have purchased a second master cylinder and it is having the same problem...  Am I missing something? :RantExplode: :RantExplode:

Well I found out my problem!  Called my old Mopar guru friend and he told me the fix.  All I just needed to do was switch the two calipers keeping the bleeder on top of the calipers.  Hope this might help someone else doing this brake upgrade down the road!  Thanks for the post and being a diehard Charger guys I will always be checking back!  One more week and I should be getting my rebuilt engine back from Mopar Engines West!  Hope to back on the road before the rain season hits!

Thanks for the post!
