Ok...someone please help.  I have a 383 engine and have every reason to believe it is the original engine.  Went back over twenty years by talking with the two previous owners and neither have swapped the engine.   I need to know if it is a number matching engine!!!  Where do I find the numbers and how do I interpret them?  I have found the numbers on the passenger side of the block and cannot make any sense of them....They are:

24881309
    LL

I am trying to find some numbers on the front of the engine under the head but cannot quite see with all the sludge and don't want to tear the alternator off to look if I don't have to.  Can anyone help  :shruggy:

Hang on, there is a wealth of knowledge on this board.  I don't know how to figure it out but my guess is Firefighter or Chryco or someone will be along shortly to help you.  :yesnod:

24881309

The raised casting number is actually 2468130-9

2468130 is the basic casting number for all 383 blocks from '59-'71, the last 9 is a foundry casting core number. Somewhere near that number will be a raised casting date.

The meaningful data is stamped in a flat pad right next to the distributor, it will contain the year, build date and other pertinent info.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I'm assuming from your screenname that you're working on a '69...

The VIN number (or at least the last eight digits) will be stamped on a flat pad directly above the oil pan on the passenger's side.  For '69, that number must match the VIN on the dashboard for it to be considered a numbers-matching engine.  Having the original engine is only one component of being able to call a car "numbers matching", but that's a whole 'nother topic.

John Kunkel is right about the location of the other pertinent details on your engine, but the only place that you can confirm whether or not an engine is original to that car is the VIN pad near the oil pan rail.

Thank you both.  I will go and see what I can find.  Hemigeno, I am curious to know what is needed to be considered a "number matching car" ??

I FOUND IT!!

The 8 numbers on the block above the oil pan match the VIN  :2thumbs:

The stamp below the distributor reads:

E383
2 3
R

I know the E is for 1969 but what do the others stand for?

Next question..Is there an easy way to find out if the Transmission is numbers matching?  Where are the numbers?

Thanks for the help

2 3 is the build date February 3, 1969.

R means it will burn Regular fuel so it started life as a 2-barrel motor.
