While looking through some car pictures I remembered seeing a car sitting in a drive way. It had been there for over 3 years and looking through pics I came to realize it was a 66/67 Belvedere or something very similar. I'd like to approach the owner about the car and maybe see if it's for sale. What is the best way to do something like that?

The car is a 2 door, red with black vinyl top, and what appears to be a chrome line running the full length of the car. The car appears to be all there and in good shape although it's been sitting in the same spot no matter the weather.

Go up to the door and ask if you you can get a closer look at the car.  Tell the owner you're interested in restoring an old car and this looks like a good candidate.  Tell him you hate seeing cars deteriorate and that you'd love to put the car back on the road.  Ask if it's for sale and go from there.  Also, it may help if you say you have a son or daughter and that you want to work on the project together.

If they say it is not for sale but walk around and answer questions and let you look at the car, offer them a few bucks for there time a $5 or $10 bill may help them remember your name and # if they ever decide to sell!

Sneaky but a good plan none the less. I was thinking of wearing my Charger t-shirt as well but my friend who used to do this sort of thing for a living said that might be a little too over the top and in your face.

If it is a car you would like to have, aproach the owner and be sincere.  You can be sincere and offer to give a few bucks for the  time to talk about a mopar, don't we all?  thats the only reason I have internet is to talk mopar, sad but true :shruggy:

It does have the shape of a Mercury Commet.

Yup, 1964 Mercury Comet.  Guy at work has a Comet convertible with a 5.0L and a 5-speed.  They built some pretty cool ones for drag racing A/FX with a 427, and B/FX with a 289, had a fiberglass hood with two scoops in the leading edge.
