side view mirror disassembly

I want to disassemble my chrome passenger side view mirror to get it re-chromed

I got the body off the mirror housing, but how do I remove the mirror?  It has a ball and socket mount and the mount is held in place by 2 screws.  I can't get a phillips screw driver to the screws because the mirror doesn't move far enough in any direction.

what's the trick?

do I need to remove the glass with a glue solvent to remove the side view mirror internals?  Is the glass glued to the internal mounting bracket?

if you get a L shaped screwdriver AND screws are not stuck, it is posible to remove the complete mirror baseplate assembly without  remove the glass from baseplate I have done it once. But if don't have the L shaped screwdriver or they are stuck, then you will need to remove the glass to get more toque with a straight screwdriver. Baseplate does have holes to get straight acces to those screws. I'm kinda on same deal to passenger side itself with stuck screws, but dunno what kind of remover to use to remove glass from baseplate.

You would need also remove wires from joystick to be able to remove assembly if it is a driver side one. There is already a thread about around.

In order to get to the screws underneath the mirror head you will need to take a Phillips head screwdriver bit (removed from the holder) secured by clamping into a needle nosed vice grip, with the bit turned at a 45 degree angle or so.  It must be a needle nosed vice grip that is slender enough to fit into the opening that's created by moving the mirror to the side as much as possible. You want to get enough clearance between the edge of the mirror and the housing to get in the area with the needle nosed (vice grip) pliers and the bit.  The key to this process is angling the screwdriver bit in the grips. Once you get the perfect angle, you can "surgically" attack  this tight area.

As far as messing around with the remote cables going into the control, I didn't do that part......but I heard you can spread the crimped area (just a bit) where the cable end goes into the control, but be very careful not to crack it or bend to far. Its shitty pot metal of some sort and very weak and prone cracking. Also, mark the cables carefully (they are color coded from the factory) so they go back into the same slot. Good Luck, as this takes some patience.

If you do try to spread the control knob cables apart on a l/s mirror and one breaks..JB weld works wonders on pot metal and will successfully reattach the cables securely.

Be sure you label wires where are attached on joystick. Normally they are colored, but years make loose the color. If you attach wrong then maybe you will move to the opposite side when you are adjusting on joystick .
