the previous owner before me butchered all kinda of wires attempting to add a amp and other crap. now ive had the car for 7 years. i took all that stuff out in fear of a fire. it dosent look like im gonna be able to swing the insurance payment this year for the car so i might take the opportunity to rewire the entire thing while i cant drive it.

i do have the factory diagrams for whatever thats worth. i dont care about correct factory connectors or stuff like that. i just want to put on all new wire, good connectors and somehow remove the bulkhead thing on the firewall. along with anything else that should be done. any help would be greathy appreciated, thanks, MIke

I bought new harnesses for under the dash and bumper to bumper in my car and it was some of the best money I ever spent on it.  Easy too.

I have been rebuilt two cars wiring, getting back to original wiring and plugs where was posible and they are still riding without any problem. I have made my own engine and headlights harnesses, mostly using used donor harnesses because i wanted to keep color codes. Down here is hard to find the right colors and gauges, specially traced wires. Also modified a 74 Rallye harness when I didn't have the complete interlock setup at the moment when changed from standart to rallye cluster, and now got back again to the interlock setup ( canadian ) since got the missed stuff. No problem. Also upgraded the alt and alt wiring to save from melting with the more powerfull alt...

I also rebuilt partially my standart underdash harness because when I got the car some of them were burn.

Is posible to make? Yes
Need time ? Yes
Need patiente and care ? Yes
Need Money NO... IS DIRT CHEAP if you compare with new and aftermarket wiring harnesses.
Is Funny ands great ? I think it is, specially when you plug everything and VOILA everything works.

You get also the satisfaction of your own work wiith no more than terminals, right wires that you have available up there, tape, solder, shrinking tubes, tain, knife... No more tools.

Also helps on know your own car IF YOU GET a problem in a future, and where you need to look at.

You have everything up there to make it... Go for it.

I replaced my 73 plymouth satellite's wiring with a new under-hood wiring harness, but not the dash wiring.  The previous owner had Jury Rigged the entire wiring system, and fried the wires like the Colonel's chicken.  The wiring harnesses today are OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive averaging $500-$600, but I found one through the Bouchillon MOPAR parts company (phone 843 744-6539 / email www.BPELowCountry.com) for $220.  It was worth every cent, because all my factory electrical gauges work.

We replaced every inch of wire in Lee1. We used the harnesses from Year One. It was worth it. Every connection worked the first time and every connector was fresh. Installing the new harnesses was easier than reusing old ones as the wires were easier to flex than old ones, and the harness was neat and tidy as each wire never was bent into a funky angle for years. I think it took three hours to do the whole thing, more than half of that spent on the dash.

Just pray it doesnt take 9 months for the harnesses to be delivered like mine...      9 months...    I built three other cars in that amount of time   :flame:

I just finished a 64 valiant from scratch didnt use anything but the old connectors as I upgraded the wire to one size larger than original. took about a week and thats fast for me as im missing 3 discs in my back. If you plan on doing it get a good wiring schamatic, the one I had didnt show half of the things on the car and didnt show all the spliced connections. dont buy the colored wiring diagrams from the guy on ebay his stuff sucks. I had to get a shop manual, everything works and works good. I like overkill in wiring as it sucks to be stranded. I have rewired about 15 different cars and never had a problem.

thanks guys id love to just buy new harnesses but thats not even close to the budget. im gonna have to make everything myself on this one.  hopefullly soon i can start tearing into her.

what about the bulkhead crap on the firewall? has anyone replaced with an different type of connector? or do i just reuse it? id like to change it all out if possible, Mike

Nacho-RT74

You can reuse the plastic assembly, just cut old terminals, buy new terminals and crimp them. Even better if you sold.

I rewired my 1970 Charger dash and engine harness last winter. The previous owner/s had done a nice job in butchering the dash harness.

Like already stated, its not that difficult to rewire a dash/engine harness, it only takes allot of time to do it. A good wire diagram is a must. Use high quality connectors and connector plier.
