Castrol Highlight: Ashley Force became the first woman driver to win a heads–up race with her father, 14–time NHRA Funny Car champion John Force, when she drove her Castrol GTX Ford Mustang through the quarter mile timers in 4.779 seconds in the first round of the 27th annual Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

Third time was a charm Sunday for Robert "Top Gun" Hight who, on his third straight trip to the final round of the Summit Southern Nationals, finally put his Team Castrol/Auto Club Ford Mustang in the Funny Car winners' circle with an easy victory over No. 1 qualifier Mike Ashley.

In winning his second consecutive NHRA POWERade tour event, Hight closed to within 45 points of pacesetting Ron Capps, whom he defeated in a crucial semifinal at Atlanta Dragway.

Hight, son–in–law of reigning and 14–time Funny Car Champ John Force, qualified No. 2 behind Ashley and then mowed down Tony Bartone, Del Worsham and Capps to reach the final round for the seventh time in the last 10 races in which he has competed.

It was an historic event for Team Castrol whose female member, 24–year–old Ashley Force, became just the second woman in Funny Car history to reach the semifinal round of an NHRA event. The only other woman to do so was Della Woods, who lost in the semifinals of the 1985 Keystone Nationals at Reading, Pa.

Ashley, who made history when she beat her dad in an all–Castrol GTX first round, moved into eighth place in POWERade points with the best performance of her pro career.

After qualifying fifth in the second quickest field in Funny Car history and after beating her dad, she stopped Tony Pedregon and the Q Chevrolet in round two. In the semifinals, with a chance to race her brother–in–law for the championship, the graduate of California State University–Fullerton was victimized by a loss of traction in the less favored left lane.

"Being the first woman to beat dad? I think it's the funniest thing I've ever heard," she said. "He's got all these daughters and he's been racing all these years and no woman has ever beaten him before.

"It was a good weekend for our Castrol GTX team. My crew chief, Dean Antonelli, gave me a great race car. It just went right down the lane (but) I knew one of these times we were going to have some tire smoke and that's what happened in the semifinals against Mike Ashley. It lost traction and I tried pedaling it (feathering the throttle), but it got sideways and I had to shut it off

I'm glad to see another force fan on dc.com.  Ashley and john force are so great.  It's so hard to be happy for John Force Racing knowing that Eric isn't around.  He will be sadly missed

I dont think he had a problem with that :P. This was taken off another thread "At the end of the date, she asked him up to her place for coffee and he said he had to get up early for work.  She then leaned into kiss him goodnight and he popped a bonner and wet himself.   "

Off topic, again :nana:                                                                                                      EVENT: 38th Pro Care Rx SuperNationals –
10th of 17 races in the Countdown to Eight

SITE: Old Bridge Township Raceway Park
Englishtown, N.J.

DATE: June 22–24

WINNER:    Funny Car – Tommy Johnson Jr.

Castrol Highlight: Ashley Force's Castrol GTX team earned its first Full Throttle Pit Crew Challenge award for qualifying excellence. Ashley's Castrol Ford was one of only two Funny Cars to go down the track, under power, on all four of its qualifying runs.

When Ashley Force lost to brother–in–law Robert Hight in the first round of Sunday's 38th annual Pro Care Rx SuperNationals, it took away Team Castrol's best chance of a Funny Car victory at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

Ms. Force, the 24–year–old daughter of drag racing icon John Force, had the best car on the grounds all weekend long, but couldn't close the deal, victimized by the failure of a $1 part, an intake manifold stud. That failure caused a misfire in the engine that slowed the Castrol GTX Ford Mustang just enough to let Hight squeak by for a first round win in the Team Castrol/Auto Club Mustang.

Hight, the surprising No. 14 qualifier after his second straight troubled weekend, was clocked in 4.938 seconds, quick time of the round. Ashley trailed at 4.949, 299.30 mph, ending a spectacular weekend on a very disappointing note.

Ashley, the front–runner in the race for the 2007 Road to the Future Award that identifies the NHRA Rookie–of–the–Year, was the only driver in the category to go A to B, under power, every time down the racetrack. That said, she wasn't around for the final round in which No. 1 qualifier Tommy Johnson Jr. beat Tony Pedregon for the championship.

Hight went out in round two when an ignition system failure left his Ford dead in the water against Tony Pedregon's Chevrolet.

As for John Force, he secured his best starting spot of the season (No. 2) and beat 2005 series champion Gary Scelzi in the first round before being upset by Tony Bartone in round two.
