the mistery about the 3rd gen wiper system

HI... I'm on this topic "try" to help about how is assemblied the wiper system and the parts what it has this system .

I have noticed how this stuff has come out latelly on several topics ( here is a pair of them: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,12068.0.html and http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,12740.0.html ), so I decided post some info about... I'm not THE  GUY about this, but since there is NOT info about, then we have at least these pics and my thoughts.

Sorry about te low quality pics, but noticed was out of focus once I downloaded to my PC. They are very blurry but I think will help anyway.

first pic are the parts of the parking cam:

Starting to assembly:

Baseplate and crank... fully greased.

VERY IMPORTANT PICS: Cam and outer piece with preload spring inserted, also fully greased. This pieces are upsided down to see the spring where goes... at this time I'm posting two pics about the only two ways to put the spring, first one is with spring ends at left side and the other one at right side of the outer plastic piece section. I have tried this to position to know with trial and error method about how really works, and found the first pic is apparently the right one. i have on this position oftenly an erratic wipers movement but an effective parking function. with springs ends on right side, I have a nice wipers without erratical movement but never parks down the hood... Maybe the second is the right one and I have something else wrong, but . If somebody have better info about this, please post.

NOW AN IMPORTANT item... the dust boot... is broken on my assembly and that makes the system requieres more attention, because engine heat and enviroment dust and water makes loose lubrication, what is very important stuff on the parking cam system.

I'm showing how is assemblied to show every step like stock from factory but after all this stuff I removed anyway, because rubber is very hard and needs to be soft to a correct function

First pic is the main arm and dust boot with clip between them... is hard to notice the clip but is there.

second pic, boot with main arm linkage already inserted, and clip ready to be closed

now, main arm linkage on cam ( 1st pic ) and then spring washer and retainer installed ( second pic ). Notice how the boot must be keeped folden up or "opened" to get access. Once the washer and retainer is installed then the boot  covers all the system. The boot matches with baseplate in fact to a "perfect" seal function and in fact the boot has a groove to keep attached on toa lip on baseplate.

You don't need to worry how the cam is positioned on arm, just that everything matches and close since once system is assemblied and mounted on car, the normal operation will locate it on its position by itself.

bottom view...the hole is to oil to keep lubricated the system without open the boot

Between the crank and motor there is a washer... I didn't take the pic because is just a normal washer and is not THE DEAL on the topic.

I taped the boot for a better view, but as stated, I removed after all. this was just for info purpouse.

last pic is the first I did take before remove everything to grease and show the system, and is how really is actually... Of course I cleaned the cowl and drain area from those cigars filters taht ONLY GOD knows how enter there.

OK... it looks there is another kind of assembly, checking this pic on RD's parts for sale section ad. The weird part is that on my 74 and also on line 71 catalog the assembly to B bodies ilustrated is the one I posted. However I'm not sure about 3 speeds ( and variables ones ), but they must hide anyway down the hood with same parking cam so I don't get it

Nacho   you are the man!!! awesome research on this issue.
I hope now that maybe i can get my wipers workin again.

I wonder if i could use a snap ring instead of the spring retainer on top of the crank shaft pins.that holds the assembly together.that seems to be my problem as the spring retaining clip comes off.it seems to have plenty of tension but still comes off

I had that problem once, and was the retainer hole was elongated/worn not enough to keep on crank groove, so that was keeping coming off. I solved because I found another used assembly with a better conditions retainer.

Use a snap ring... maybe yes, But I think if you use at the same time a whaser that FITS PERFECT AND TIGHT on crank hole and then the snap ring will have better tight and safe assembly. However, new assemblies are still available at dealers up there ( buymopar, bradsnosparts, YearOne ), so why don't go with a new assembly ? I'm not on that by the moments since I'm dealing with another stuff, but will buy a new kit soon for sure. Only hope find also the dust boot someday in the future.

     I took some parts off a 76 plymouth fury and it had a good boot on it i believe.not sure were your at, but maybe look for another later b body and try and get the boot off one of those.just a thought
  i am gonna try and take a look at getting mine fixed this weekend

ATTENTION!!! it does look the preload spring is not mounted on any of these positions... does look the tab of the outer section of cam assembly sits IN THE MIDDLE of the spring arms. Dunno why and still can't find the logic on this spring position and what's it function, but I was making another test about and does look is on that way

    hey thanks for the pm update I have been so busy with my kids and cubscouts,and car to get on here.
Anyways I believe that is how i put my spring in like you have it in your drawing ,but my wipers still won't park.when i shut them off they stopp just at the edge of the stainless trim at the bottom of the windshield.I then have to push them down by hand under the back of the hood.
Oh well.but hey with your help they are still staying together and not lcoming apart after the first pass.
