Anybody know of a source for new air conditioning evaporator cores for 2nd gen chargers with factory air?  I surfed the web and never came across any place that had them.  I would think the same core probably fits Coronets, Road Runners, etc.  You can get about every other part but that one---even compressors.  Of course, I bet you can buy a new evaporator for every Chevrolet ever made.

Looks like I stumped the panel on this one.  Well, I called Classic Auto Air in Florida and found out that they are actively pursuing supplying the evaporator for the factory ac installation in 69 Chargers.  They don't have it yet but do plan to have this as a product.  It will be brass/copper tube with aluminum fins.  If you need one immediately, they can have your existing evaporator replicated if you send it in.  Cost is $395.  But he said that when they get the evaporator as a catalog item, the cost will be considerably less.  They also plan to reproduce the condenser with both tubes coming out on the passenger side.  They already have one with the tubes coming out on opposite sides.  Some Chargers came this way.  Mine came in the first configuration.  Since it will be years before my car gets on the road, this was good news.  Once I get the heater case rebuilt and installed, I don't want to ever have to take it out again.

I did get on the web and surf last night for a couple of hours and never did find any place to get a replacement evaporator.  I have the 69 parts catalog (huge) and even it is vague on the Chrysler part number for this evaporator.  But I seriously doubt that Chrysler would have any of these left in stock anyway.  They are getting rid of old parts as fast as they can.

Chatt: just out of interest, what's wrong with your original? I only ask because I have never seen (or heard) of a bad one, and I'm sure I've owned as many, or more A/C cars than anyone.

I know this is no help as to your original question, but I'm curious.

My thought process was that considering the trouble of pulling and installing the heater case that since I will have it out rebuilding it and considering that the evaporator is 38 years old that if they didn't cost too much that it would be prudent to just replace it.  Those things usually only cost $50-$100.  Obvioulsy, I may have to alter my plan.  Classic Auto Air offers a cleaning and pressure testing service for evaporators (condensers as well).  I may have to go that route but I don't want to just reinstall mine until I at least verify that it will hold pressure.  I guess that's the engineer in me coming out.
