Need help on what oil, filter and pump for cam break-in

Oil

I'm going to be breaking in a new cam and new rings (top ring moly-faced) in my overhauled Low-Power 69 440.  I came across a number of diesel oils when I was shopping, but I have no idea which ones if any has the right additives.  My searches of the site turn up old threads that recommend diesel oil, but now it seems that diesel oil is no better than regular car oil.  I don't think I will be able to get GM EOS either.

Engle (K-56 Hydraulic) recommended using airplane engine oil, and I was able to find some.  There was AeroShell multi-grade 15W-40 or something like that looked good, except it was a semi-synthetic oil.  Old threads say do not use synthetic oil for break-ins but they do not mention semi-synthetics at all.  There was also AeroShell 30-weight, 40-weight and other single viscosity oils that appear to be made from crude oil, but I don't know which would be best.  It is pretty cold up here (0 to 10 degrees F) right now too so that is probably a factor.  I plan on using the Mancini Hemi oil pan so I will need 7 quarts total correct?

Filter

What do you folks recommend for an oil filter for my 440?  Brand with part number would be a great help because I don't know which model # filters work on a 440.

Pump

I have both the Melling high volume oil pump and the high pressure oil pump and a new hardened intermediate shaft.  Which one would be best to use on a primarily street engine?

I also have Percy's Seal-4-Good aluminum exhaust gaskets (PN 66036) I'm going to use with my 1 3/4" primary Hedman headers and 452 heads, any tips or tricks for a long lasting maintenance free seal?  Thanks for any help

As far as the filter, wix or napa gold.  The Napa or wix dealer will know the number because I don't know it off the top of my head.  I think the Napa number is 1515.

I think Ron uses Rotella-T 15w 40 diesel for his break in lube and the EOS but I see you can't get that.  I'm going to check a GM dealer today cause it seems like a lot of people are having a hard time getting this stuff??

I had heard the Shell was in the process of changing the formulation of Rotella, so it may be worth checking first.
I hadn't heard that with EOS.  What's going on there?
Where are you located reload?

Shell Rotella 15/40 diesel and the EOS works fine. Even though the rotella is losing some zinc, it's still a good lube. Use the EOS for extra protection and EP additives.

I use a Fel Pro high temp header gasket (I forget the part number but I haveit here someplace) and I run a bead of that high temp Permatex copper sealant around each port.

Get the EOS....don't take any chances !   

Hv pump with the Mancini pan....yes it holds 7qts with the filter. 

Percy's dead soft aluminum are the best gaskets i've used....and they are reusable !

Ok, I made a trek to the generic motors dealership and managed to get EOS in two 16oz bottles.  How much do I need for the break in and then how much do I need for subsequent oil changes?  Thanks for the help

Use 1 bottle on breakin and 1 bottle with each oil change. I would change the oil and filter immediately after the cam is broken in....then again after 500 miles. After the 500 mile oil change you're good to go with regular intervals.


When breaking in the cam ; bring it up to 2000 rpm immediately and keep it there for at least 20 minutes with the occasional blip to the throttle. This will help with lifter rotation and ensure a smooth breakin. Try to set the timing to 30* @ 2000 to keep the engine running cooler. If you're doing the breakin in a warm area it helps to have an electric fan in front of the radiator blowing air towards the grille to keep things cool.

Comp & Crane cams also make additives simialr to EOS

Yep, the Dello is good stuff.....but i would still add the EOS.

I just got my Comp cams XE268h from Jegs today. The instructions recommend Shell Rotella for break in. Maybe I'll use the dello after the cam is broke in.

Correct.  I asked for "assembly lubricant"  but the guy at the counter knew it as "EOS" (Engine Oil Supplement).  If I recall it says both EOS and Assembly Lubricant on the bottle.

Update:  Cam break in appears to have went fine.  I used a bottle of EOS plus the Shell Diesel 15-40.  I'm just working on tuning and getting a few kinks worked out.  Thanks again folks

Also  The guy at the auto store says the rotella 15/40 will leak in my car since I already used 10/40 in it.  He says its thinner. Opinions on these guys?

I think the reason they say "assembly lube only, not for use as an additive" is for emissions reasons + newer cars are supposed to not need it (roller cams).  There is some chance I suppose that it could clog a catalytic converter, which I assume you don't have.

As far as what the auto guy says, I think you'll be ok.  I'd think that 15/40 is at least as thick as 10/40.  Don't take my word for it though.  I will continue to use Rotella 15/40 and a bottle of EOS every oil change from here on out.  Good luck

i personally use valvoline racing oil with a bottle of eos at every oil change.  valvoline racing has more zinc in it than rotella.  it is more expensive than shell thats for sure.   but my cam failure was pretty damn expensive also.     by the way,  what is everyone paying for eos? i bought 2 bottles the other day and it cost me 20 bucks. i thought that seemed a tad expesive and i hate my gm dealership so i was wondering if theres a place online i can order it?

Mike, i just purchased a dozen bottles of EOS for $6.20 each. That price does seem a bit on the high side
