Did you confirm the distributor rotation and firing order?

Is there spark going into the distributor cap ? Try grounding the coilwire and look for spark....you need to isolate the problem.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Take out Number one plug, plug the plug wire back on , lay it on the motor where it's grounded. Turn the motor over and verify the plug fires. If so, it's a timing issue. Bump motor over with thumb over number one plug hole and feel for compression stroke.  Stop engine at top dead center of comp. stroke and ensure rotor is pointing to number one plug wire to fire. Prolly will need  to back up distr. a few degrees upon fire up. If you have installed a new cam, set the carb to take the motor up to 1800 -2000 rpm for cam breakin.  If you have leaks,  things to correct, shut it down. Then upon fire up take it back up. DO NOT IDLE FOR THE FIRST TWENTY MINUTES.....j

I just went through this same issue.  new motor, I had to clean the paint from under the ground ( motor to battery ) and then it was fine.  You need to chase down where you dont have power. Get a test light, turn ignition to run, check for power at ballast resisitor, then check at positive side coil, then check see if you got spark coming out of coil while cranking, then check and see if ya got spark at number one spark plug while cranking. these tests should pinpoint problem. keep us posted. Make sure ya got a strong battery

I have to agree with HECK above.  I put a new engine in and had problems. After many hours of troubleshooting, I found the engine was grounded but not good enough. I cleaned up the connection and was running 5 minutes later.
