do you use spark plug heat shields?

I'm wondering if anyone uses spark plug heat shields.  I heard they make changing plugs harder.  The boot on #8 plug has cracked and wanted to know if it was the heat.

I'm assuming the plug shields mount under the exhaust maifold for #6 & 8 and #7 on the drivers side?

thanks for your comments

Mine were removed before I got the car. I got another donor engine to use standart pistons, rods and crank to install on my factory engine. Storaged the shields it had but never installed. They are a little bit rusted, but surface. I dunno if I have the complete set and still don't know if install on next job I have to do on my engine.

The fact is I don't have mounted but probably will do If I have complete set... how many pieces are they and where locate ? I think I have 3 or 4 pieces

I used the "cloth" style ones, it actually made it easier to change plugs and was necessary as the plug boots cams close enough to the headers to warrant their needing replaced every few months.

Do these work better than the factory metal shields?  I just changed plugs on my 400 yesterday.  Its a big block in a small block car (passenger-side inner fender isnt cut-out) and they were a pain in the  :moon: to get at...    Those heat shields werent helping any either.

they do help depending how tight the wire is to the header

I went from changing plug wires (due to boots cracking) once every 2 years instead of once every 4 months.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?
