Hi guys!
My wife and I, along with a couple of friends are talking about realising a long time dream, and drive across the USA.
The plan so far consists of flying to LA, buy a car and drive all the way across to Chicago and then to New York! There we'll arrange shipping for the car and fly home our selves. (We all live in Norway)

As the car-nut I am, im consentrating on the car, letting the others find out about all the other details!  ;D
So my question for you guys are: Witch car would you recomend? Being a mopar-lover im looking at some Plymouth Fury Convertibles now. Something like http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1966-Plymouth-Fury-Convertible-Classic_W0QQitemZ130098508183QQihZ003QQcategoryZ6411QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The women would like a convertible, and us guys is most familliar with mopar products. I guess when you buy a 40 years old car, without having the chance to test it first, its best to stick to what you know right?

Any other tips and recomendations is highly appreciated!

My brother and I drove my convertible Dakota from Los Angeles to Atlanta. We drove a few miles on Route 66.

My $.02...
Plan to do lots of top-up driving. I would NOT pass up a nice hardtop to look for a convertible. Parts of Route 66 are rough or non-existent.

My brother also took a motorcycle trip from Florida to Los Angeles, also picking up part of Route 66. If you're interested you can read about it here.

Driving a 40 year old car across the country could possibly involve large tow bills. :icon_smile_tongue: You'd really have to trust the seller a LOT to take him on his word that "you could drive this car anywhere", if you know what I mean.

Another alternative would be to rent a motor home...I know it doesn't sound as fun, but you could camp in it wherever you felt like & it should be a bunch more reliable out on the open road.
A couple years ago, there was a group of 5 guys from New Zeland that bought new Goldwings in California & were spending 2 months to ride across the country. They said they were going to sell them in New York when they were through & fly back home.
I'm thinking they had some extra disposable income available to them, that the average tourist doesn't have. ;)

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)
