Why?

Why is it that when I finally find a radio station I like that they change formats??

I had a local favorite that played 60s/70s/80s and it went "fresh and hip" last year.  Adios KFRC.

So I find another station but, as of noon today, it's kapoot too.  Godspeed, KMAX.  The new format is, you guessed it, "fresh and hip."

Don't get me wrong, I have an Ipod that I use/enjoy and I hate radio commericals as much as anyone.  But why can't a guy, in a purportedly coveted demographic, just listen to the damn radio in peace?

Luckily we have a pretty good "classic rock" station thats been around for as long as I have.  Its not going anywhere.  They play more than what I would consider classic rock but its all good stuff for the most part.  We did have one true classic rock station once but it turned country.   :'(

Thanks for the streaming suggestions.  I've got all my Itunes on hard drives on my work & home PCs so I've got good tunes when I'm at the puter.

The problem is in the car.  I don't wanna be one of the geezer crowd listening to newstalk and I'm too cheap for satellite radio.

One decent local radio station.  Is that too much to ask?

I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!

you should call the station everyday and complain until they change it back or start a new station just for you lol

Damn, this morning the station became 95.7 "The Wolf"  playing 10,000 country hits commercial-free.  Thanks & yee haw...

Who, in the metropolitan San Francisco Bay Area, listens to country?  Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with country and someday Shania Twain will be my love slave.  Oh yes, she will.  And TK is OK too.  But really, ain't that the stuff for farmers, bubbas and union slackers (ok, half-kidding: lighten up, Francis!)

And why, in their infinite wisdom, do the station-owners think "The Wolf" will do any better than "The Bear" which went belly-up two years ago,
ON THE EXACT SAME STATION, playing....you guessed it...
Country tunes!

Can it be that there are fewer older white guys who want Boston and White Snake than the 15 people who listen to country in SF?

I'm still mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore!

Well I live in the midwest so its no wonder our stations get sold out to country, but I wouldnt think it would happen so much out there...

I'll tell you a funny one.  The local radio station, which was, you guessed it...  country, but was also a farmers talk radio station, was recently sold to hispanics who are now about 30% of the population here.  The farmers were :flame: when they turned on the radio and heard a bunch of trumpets playing and people singing in spanish...

Neal_J

Yea, I don't dig the mariachi music on the radio.

Now, spanish TV, that's another story.  The babes are so hot, you don't care WHAT they're blabbering about.

Especially Jackie Guerrido with the morning weather....  Yummy!

well then, as the saying goes, "you get what you pay for".

I for one couldn't stand any of the stations here in L.A. - either Top 40, "Alternative", Classic Rock where they played "Black Dog" and "Dust in the Wind" ad nauseam, or Spanish.

I was already considering satellite, and when Howard said he was jumping to Sirius, I was sold for good. And I ain't going back.

Sorry in advance for the long post, but being a radio programmer for the last 9 years, I just couldn't pass this thread up  ;)

I hate to break it to you guys, but Country is the fastest growing format in the US, and Rock is the most dropped format in radio. Country has embraced pop and rock in a way that is unoffensive to most every age of listener and is able to cross male/female boundaries. Country radio is onto a winning formula right now.

New rock stations are dying off because of the dearth of good rock music being produced today and the fact that hip-hop has replaced rock as the sound of rebellion.  Fact is, rock musicians sing about being hardcore, rap artists back up the talk with the the walk.  Rap fans are now in their late 20's and are on the cusp of becoming the coveted demo.

FWIW, the fact that most of us on this site are men already identifies us as a secondary audience anyway.  All the research shows that women drive consumer spending in this day and age.  Since the ladies are handling the money, they come first when picking programming.  They are also far more interested in style and trends than men are...hence the "hip and trendy" formats you are seeing take over the favorites of the middle aged guy.  Men haven't been forgotten by radio, they just aren't the primary focus anymore.

If you are a guy looking for anything on today's radio, you are going to have to catch a really good oldies format (like my own  ;) ), or a classic hits/rock format, which are already starting to burn themselves out (how many times can you really listen to Stairway to Heaven, anyway?)  There is good news though, as hip-hop has already taken over mainstream radio, and is starting to show signs of wear.  There is little innovation going on in that genre, and it will also burn itself out.  When it does, let's just hope for a rock revival instead of a disco trend!

If you are interested in a unique fussion of rock, pop, and alternative, I would suggest finding a local Christian Rock station.  IMO, it is one of the few formats and genre's still interested in experimentation, and some of the stuff is REALLY good.  If you are a DirecTV subscriber, check out XM The Torch in your music channels.

Christian Rock? That's like saying "Volvo with a gun rack"

The thing about Christian pop/rock/r&B is that even if its the worse tripe you've ever heard, it's still gets a pass from its listeners due to its subject matter.

I think you are judging a bit prematurely.  I listen to almost every kind of music, and the "Christian Rock" format is the most open to differing styles of music.  There is a lot of unique blending of musical styles that just won't get airplay on any other format, plus the artists themselves are under less pressure for commercial success and get away with a lot more musical experimentation than mainstream artists forced into a formulaic sound by a producer or label.

There was a time when you might have been able to take a shot at the musicianship of Christian bands, but that time has long since passed.  The Christian Rock format is showing steady growth because it is producing quality work.  It isn't as ubiquitus as a Top 40 or Country, but it's quickly garnering a lot of respect from the music industry as a whole.  iTunes has a huge selection of Christian artists and the leading music researchers have trippled their chart reporting for the format.

If you don't like the music because of the message, that's one thing, but to discredit the quality of the music because of it's Christian origin is siimply ignorance of the genre.

Until recently I would have agreed with you because it was substandard for a long, long time. That's not the case now.
