My 68 has a 83/4 rear & I think 3:23 gears. I was a bit surprised that it was not originally a sure grip as it is a factory R/T, but whatever...I want to put a sure grip in it this spring, what new parts options do i have? Does Mopar carry units to install? also what are the advantages/disadvantages of new/old other than price. I dont want to really skimp on this phase.  Also, should I think of changing the gear ratio at this point? What is everyones idea of the best street setup? Id like it to have some guts to break loose when needed, but I dont want it too tall for occasional highway travel. Ideas anyone?

The suregrip units are available new and used....no worries there. As far as the ratio....that depends alot on tire height. A 3.23 with a 28in tire (275/60/15) is actually a 2.99 final drive ratio. The same tire with a 3.55 is a 3.30 final drive ratio.

I built my rearend last winter.  I went from an open 2.76 to a Powerlock Suregrip with 4.10s.  If i did it again, I would probaby go a little milder on the gears, maybe 3.73 or 3.91s.  Also, if you buy a used unit, I would STONGLY reccomend getting a clutch type vs. a cone because they're rebuildable, and it's hard to judge a sure-grip unit by it's looks, so if you buy a missrepresented one, or if you do an excessive amount of burnouts :drive: you don't need to completely replace the unit.  I got strange gears too, I heard they were about the best you can get for the price.  Nothing has gone wrong with mine at all.
