My very first charger:
Sitting in english class one day I borrowed a local trader paper from a class mate.  I found an add that said "68 Charger, rusty but runs $200.00"  I had 40 minutes before the bell rang and was going nuts.  I asked for a hall pass to use the restroom (pay phone in the same hallway) and scrounged for a dime (showing my age).  I called the number and got a busy signal, my heart sank.  Tried a few more times and gave up.  Stirred in my seat until the bell rang (I think that's where I got my first gray hair).  The bell rings and I call my sisters boyfriend, he worked nights so he came and picked me up.  I knew the car was close by because of the phone number, so I went to my local police station (I knew the chief, kinda sorta) and they had this big book with phone numbers first, addresses second.  They let me look it up and off we went.
The poor car sat with sagging springs and was covered in about a foot of snow, but it was complete and looked like it might run.  I knocked on the door and some old dude answered.  I told him I saw his add and tried to call (he never did ask how I found him).  Frank and I had to shovel his driveway and clear the car if we wanted to look at it (of course the driveway was about 5 car lengths long).
She was bright red with white top and interior, very rusty and very sad looking.  I promised her a 2nd chance.  He would not let me take the car because the muffler was missing and he didn't want me to get in trouble.  Frank and I went and got a muffler and 2 clamps, the old guy let us use his hacksaw and after about 30 minutes we had it on.  He cut the price to $150.00 and gave me the title.  Frank followed me home, but on the way, a Ky trooper pulled me over for littering.  My vinyl top was coming off in sheets.  We ended up picking up everyone else's trash until it got dark, about 45 minutes, while the trooper sat in his warm car.
The car was so rough looking that my parents would not let me park it in our driveway, so I parked it on the street.  That began a passion for old mopars that has never gone away.  The passion has outlived 2 wives, 3 or 4 girlfriends, 2 wars and 6 jobs.  My 3 boys love Mopars and I just hope they have better luck with women than I have.

Ok, yeah, I know, enough is enough

No NO that story is awsome :punkrocka: I can almost relate to that last paragraph.
I too still have my charger; it was the fall of 1981 and being I was 16ish or so I was reading the local news paper on a Saturday and read a short ad about this '69 charger.
I showed my father the ad he looked at it and decided to give the owner a call, they did have a lengthy conversation. Next weekend later My dad and My uncle and I went to look at the car,Little I knew the car was in a accident! :'(

It needed a 1/4 panel, trunk lid, gas tank. It alsoNeeded :icon_smile_evil: to straighten out the frame some as well.  Dad knew what he was doing I suppose beings he worked for a body shop early in his working days for several years.

But when I saw this car I knew this was the one.  Dad paid the owner $300.00 is cash My uncle and I drove the car home!
And from the word go It has been a father and son project!

Now I'm restoring it myself and hoping it will turn out great.

I found my 69 by word of mouth.  I had taken my 70 SS Chevelle to a show, and ended up talking to another guy there that had brought out his 69 R/T car.  I happened to mention that I was actively looking for one and he mentioned he knew a guy that wanted to unload his because he didn't have time for it anymore.  It was sitting tucked behind a service station no more than 10 miles from home.  I called the guy up and set up a time to come look at it.  He wanted $3,000 for it.  It ran very strong and had TONS of new parts with it (interior and misc. trim parts).  I told him I would call himt he next day.  Since the car wasn't listed for sale in any newspapers or anything, I knew I had a little time to gather the needed funds for it.  I went back 3 days later and drove it up on the trailer and brought it home.  It sat here for 4 years before I finally tore into it in September of 2005.  At this time, I am less than a month away from painting it then reassembly.

I found my first '69 F6 Charger in Hemmings, sold that. My current SE I found on the old DC.com site the day before it crashed, I guess I got lucky because not many people had time to respond to the ad. I bought it from a guy in Elkton MD. I promised to give him the first test drive when it's done.

After piddlin with Chevys for more than 35 years, I got bored. I have always liked some Mopars body styles, but had never stumbled across one as I have the others. Then lookin it the next state over local trader , I found three Charger that had to go. That state requires a title before tag issue and my state does not. The three Charger are a 71,72 and 73 models, and had been sitting so long , a chainsaw for tree removal was required.  The 72 now has a drivetrain, new interior and is being primed for paint. Bumpers to be sent off soon for re chroming.........I am very happy and having a ball.......again.....J

I think about the most frustrating thing in the world is being a 15 year old junior high school kid trying to buy a 69 Dodge Charger. You have no form of transportation on your own yet to go check out prospects - unless a bicycle counts - and we lived out in the "country", and every morning you have to spend the day in school, when all the hot deals get snapped up by 40 something year old men who take the day off work to check out a good deal. I don't know how many times I would get in an argument with my mom "But Mom, I GOTTA see this car! If I wait till I get done from school it'll be SOLD! At least let me call Dad at work!". And of course, the answer was always no! And, of course, by the time I got home from school, I would hit the phone before the screen door finished closing and the car would be SOLD.

This was back in 88. I do happen to recall a particularily difficult mom/son argument over a 69 R/T with a 440 going for $600.00. I remember being told when I got home from school that the car was "just being driven away. And I had asked the young girl on the phone if it had had any rust, and she said, well, not really." !

Anyway...many months went by. I checked the paper every single morning before school. One morning I opened the paper, I saw a 68 Dodge Charger 440 Auto green/green. Runs good - $2995. Whew...at the time that was a bit over my budget, and I really didn't want a green car. I could really only afford around $1000 from my bus boy job at the restaurant.  But, I had been searching for such a long time, I decided to check it out.

It turned out to be much bigger than what I thought from the pictures I saw in magazines, or cars I'd seen on the street. Sitting inside, I had a hard time seeing over the dashboard, so the owner got me a phone book to sit on. Since I had my permit at the time, my dad had to ride with me, and the owner hopped into the back. I remember it was a very big car on the inside.

We wound up leaving without making an offer...I felt reluctant about buying a green charger with green interior. But, it had been a year since my search had begun, and I really wanted one in a bad way. The other thing was the price...I simply could not afford $3000. I could really only put down $1000. I made a deal with my dad...he said if I really wanted it, he would give me a loan for the remaining balance!

Since I knew even with the loan, I really couldn't afford that much, I made a desperate move. I called the guy up and said I'd give him $1600 for the car! I felt embarrased and he sounded offended at my offer, and I was straightforward and said basically "Well, I know its probably worth more but I just can't afford any more than that!" To my astonishment, he said he'd think about it and call me back. My hands were sweating and my heart was racing! He called back, and said he wanted $1800. Yikes...another $200...thats a lot of dough when you're 15! I said will you take $1700? And he said "Yes"! WOW! UNREAL! I own a Dodge Charger!!!!!!! WHEWWWW!!!!! ( You know the feeling. :-) )

I still own it today, 17 years later. I would never sell it for any price.

I've told this story before, so heres the readers digest version. I was out driving around (working) in a not so great area of town, and not known for its Mopars. I happened to see a car cover over a 2nd gen Charger (couldnt see a bit of the car though) after a few weeks and a windy weekend, I noticed part of the cover had blown off and revealed a yellow body with factory bb stripes, it was a 68 genuine R/T! I almost couldnt contain myself, I knew I had to have it. After finally tracking down the owner, (it was a vacant house and he lived out of town) we met and he agreed to sell it for 3K. He had owned it since 71' (second owner) He was tired of kids asking him to sell it for a few hundred bucks. I couldnt get him the 3K fast enough. I drove it home that night. Has a 440/727, black interior, very minimal body damage, all complete and I'll never stop loving it..
that was about 3.5 yrs ago....
