Has anyone towed a 2nd gen Charger with a 1500 Reg cab Dodge Ram or something similar?  Just wondering if the weight would be a problem.  I have a '01 4x2 Dodge Ram w/ a 5.9, reg cab, short bed pick up, and I want to tow my '69.

Thanks,
Fernando

i've seen exploders towing stuff, so i know a dodge 1500 will handle that.  Are you just talking a one time deal or all the time.  It will definitely haul it, but i wouldn't make it a habit. I'm on board with Mark on the no long hauling.

It shouldn't have any problem towing it.  Get yourself a good electronic brake controller and it'll pay for itself  :yesnod:

I tow b bodies with my Rumble Bee.  It's a short box half ton with a 5.7.  My nephew uses his 4WD 360 automatic powered short box Ram.  No problems yet.  But I agree; don't scrimp on the brake controller.

Does anyone have a rough estimate of how much it would cost to rent a truck/trailer that could haul two vehicles at once? Round trip of roughly 120 miles (60 to location, 60 back)

I tow my 69 Charger 500 with a 96 318 long wheel base Dodge Ram 1500 without any problems. I've towed  from  Arkansas to Ca. and from Arkansas to Houston. As long as you have trailer brakes and a load leveling hitch you should be fine.

No problem.  Just make sure the trailer sits level. Any full size truck can pull a car trailer. (NOT ON A BUMPER BALL)  :nono: If you're new to towing, make sure you give extra room for stoping and watch your turns. The trailer will cut corners.  Also, check your tie downs after you drive a few miles. Now, when you're ready to go let me know and I'll give you my address so you can BRING THE CAR TO MEEEEEEEEEE.   Good luck.   Chuck............

I towed my 69 from delaware to SC with my 99 suburban, 5.7  1500 2wd.  It works great on flat road  I got completely comfortable with it enough to run 70-75mph.  Going up a mountain would be slow with it, but up and down little hills is perfectly fine.

In have used a 85 short bed 4x4 before as a tow vechile. After I towed a 69 Chrysler 300 with it I decided it was time to step up. It did fine but I could feel it was at it's limit. Now we use a 3/4 ton quad cab 4x4 with a load leveler hitch. I towed a little red 450 miles back from Iowa and could hardly tell it was there. Just be sure to check your straps every 100 miles or so. We were towing a 73 roadrunner back home and a strap broke on some very hilly roads. Somehow the car stayed on the tralier. When we stopped for fuel I found the backstrap broken and got a cold shiver down my spine thinking what could have happened. Someone was watching over us that day.

Thanks for the input, guys!  But, I was searching through the U-Haul website, and it says that my pickup is not recommended for towing a Charger.  If it comes down to it, I'll use my wife's Tahoe.

i've towed mine several times with my 03 1500 QC short bed, couple hundred miles, no problems at all

Is a Tahoe really any better than a 1500 Ram? Aren't they built on a 1/2 ton chassis too?

a tahoe would be about the same as my suburban, maybe better if the engine was the same, less butt on a tahoe

What is the tow rating of a Tahoe though? I doubt it is much better than a Ram.

The U-Haul website is pretty lame, it checks the weight of the tow vehicle against the weight of the vehicle being towed and if the tow vehicle doesn't way more by a certain amount, it says you can't do it.
Just pretend that your truck is quad cab when going through the site and you'll get the reservation.  The dealer doesn't care.  :yesnod:

Now that you mention it a guy I talked to said that also. He called for a trailer and they asked what he had and what he was towing. At the time he had a F150 and was towing a Fury cop car home. The dealer said that was not allowed so he called back a while later and said he was towing an Escort instead.  :icon_smile_big:

The one time we rented one the dealer didn't ask any questions at all.

You are probably right, the ram should be rated better.  A 4x4 tahoe would feel better to me than my 2wd suburban with the same 5.7 engine.
