I have a 73 BB 727 I picked up the other day for my 68.  Its been sitting in a shed for 4 years and was suposed to work fine when it was pulled out. So this morning I opened the pan up and the fluid was red and gray goo and alot of crud from sitting with no dipstick tube. I sifted threw the stuff and found some tiny brass particles  and a spot on magnet there was some silver metal splinters. about enough to cover a penny. The idea was to throw a few seals and filter and drop it in as I am on tight budget and just want the car together for now.   Is there anything I should look at before putting it in, or would the metal in pan be a death note for it? Also, is there a way to check the condition of the  stock converter? Last but not, can the adverage guy handle installing one of those overhaul kits with the clutches an bands etc. or is this best left to a pro. Any 727 info you can spare would be great.

Some crud in the pan is from normal ware and tear. The brass filings are probably from worn bushings. I was just quoted $500.00 to rebuild a 727 if I bring the tranny in. There are a couple of special tools you'll need to rebuild it if you do it yourself. If you do decide to do just a filter change, REPLACE the shifter selector shaft seal before you put the tranny in the car. Because when they leak, they really leak and are a bitch to intstall the wright way with the tranny in the car. More than likely if you don't get it rebuilt now, you'll be pulling it out of the car latter on to get it rebuilt.

I decided to get a overhaul kit and go threw it and toss in a new converter.  Im going to need some sort of reference guide to walk me threw it. So if you know of any books or videos can you pass along a name etc. I have already looked on the side of a 12 pack of bud, but there directions were not to clear.

One of those repro factory shop manuals would be a great start.  They are almost indispensable.

Rayzor

were would you get one of those?

Any of the restoration places like Year One or the Paddock have them.  There are a number of online book retailers that have them too (Amazon.com?).  They turn up at swap meets all the time.  E-bay, but that would probably be my last resort.
There is also a version on cd-rom out there.

I did buy this video from this seller. I've watched it once. I figure I'll have to watch it a couple more times before rebuilding a 727.

If you have any questions, let me know.  I can provide you with the names of the alternative tools to use instead of the specialty tools so that you can get the job done and done right the first time.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

I found my first busted piece in it already. the throttle valve stop bracket is snapped off, that would allow the valve to come out to far....off to a start.

Gotta love the old story of the seller, "It worked great when it was removed". Well why did you remove it then. Seems like there is something wrong with everyone of them.
