Transmission Problem 93 Dodge B250

A guy I know has a 93 B250, and he said he was driving it and it was slipping going up the hills, so he checked the fluid saw it was low and added some. But he may have added too much he said, next time he checked the level it was up higher than the full mark. He said when he got it home and went to drive it the next day it wouldn't engage in any drive gear, that the motor just spun when put into a drive gear. Neutral and Park are the only that work. I didnt ask him if it was a 3.9, 5.2, or 5.9. It still uses a 904 similar to the old small block Chargers isn't it? I thought as soon as he told me that it just revved in any gear that the valve body was the cause. I have a Ranger that has done it 3 times and it's always the valve body. But that's a Ford automatic transmission it's going to tear up anyway and I knew it when I bought it. So he's on a budget and wants to see if he can try to check anything first to see if it will get going and last a bit longer. Should he try a filter change and proper amount of fluid and see if it hurts? The kit is only like $5.  Any suggestions, I told him you guys would have some ideas, so I told him I would ask.

A '93 B van could have any one of several transmissions, depends on engine size. If he was checking the fluid lever on Neutral (not Park) and the fluid level is high it may be because of a failed pump; this would also explain the loss of the gears.

Have him check the fluid level cold after sitting overnight, then start the engine and check the level again with the shifter in Neutral; if the fluid level doesn't drop after engine start it's likely a failed pump.
