How do I identify what auto trans I have?  When I got my Rusted/Trash (and a good screwing), from HLPAG, they had put an auto tranny in the passenger compartment but I don't know how to tell what it is.  Thanks for the help...

RD

if pan has this shape it is a 904:

if pan has this shape it is a 727:

67 Plymouth Barracuda, 69 Plymouth Barracuda, 73 Charger SE, 75 D100, 80 Sno-Commander

AirborneSilva

Thank you RD, I'll take a look at it tomorrow....

RD

forgot to mention.  the 904 will only fit /6's and small blocks.  The 727 was made in a /6, small block and big block version.  So even if you have a 727 it may be for an engine you do not plan to use.  get pics if possible.

There should be a VIN on the case and a part number stamped on the pan rail.  Between those two numbers you can usually tell exactly what the tranny came from and often what internals should be in it.

AirborneSilva

Thank you both for your replies and help.  I took some pictures and did a little looking on the case for numbers.  It is indeed a 727 and I also believe that it is for a big block but I'll let you guys tell me if I'm right, so here's a couple of pictures;

John_Kunkel

Like Andy said, check the part number on the pan rail for actual year/application.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Ok, so I'm a bit slow and stuborn  :icon_smile_big: just keep beating me over the head and I'll eventually get there  :smash: So, here is the picture that Andy told me to get......  I still have no idea what the numbers mean though  ???

the a-727-B cast in the housing is for a big block, the small block one will be a-727-A

AirborneSilva

Thank you RollingThunder, so then will it fit any big block (i.e. 440) and any year or did the bolt patern change?  Sorry if these are dumb questions but I really don't know  :icon_smile_shy:

rollingthunder

yes it will the last 727 made in 79 will fit the first b and rb engine  but not shure on the 1958 350

oh I forgot the cast crank engine's are balanced at the tork converter and have a thcker balancer so if you get a cast crank engine get the tork converter thats on it.

2892090 2582 7766

2892090 is the part number of an A727 from a '69 B or C body with a 383 2-barrel engine.

2582 is the build date August 22, 1968

7766 is the sequence number

If it still has original internals it is low performance all the way, it will need some upgrading if used in a performance application.

Damn, I don't know how you got all that outta those numbers but thank you very much.  I will be putting it behind a 440, some day, so I will be upgrading the inards before hand.  Thanks again for all the info and help.

How did you arrive at August 22, 1968 from 2582

He might have used the 10,000 Day Calendar Chart to figure out the build date.

I also have a question, ive got a 727 from a 69 charger 383.  Its numbers matching but one thing that kinda throws me off is that the identifacation number which from what i hear should be a A 727 B but the only number i have on it is 176-1.

Thanks

Ghoste

Yes, that's from a 10,000 day calender.  The number you are looking at Venom is not the one you need.  Part numbers are stamped on the side of the pan rail as in the pic above and they'll provide a lot of info for you.  Ignore the cast in 176-1 for what you are looking for.  If it came off of a 383, it's a 727.
