Look for the part number stamped in the case just above the pan gasket on the drivers side.

Some years can be found here:

thanks john for that info. i looked up the number i fould on the case and couldnt find it. here is what i found on it:  2466871. would anybody know what this is  from? thanks guys!!

That number doesn't show up in any passenger car lists, it might be a truck unit.
The number span is from the early sixties so it's likely a cable shift unit, does it have two cables attached or does it have an external shift lever?

hi guys. there are two brackets sort of connected to each other coming out of the tranny for the shifter. it looks like there would be rods connecting to them and not cables. it came out of either a 70 dodge charger with a 318 or a 1985 dodge pickup with a 318...of course someone over the years could have replaced it i guess. i was just curious what all it would fit...

If there are two external levers on the drivers side, one on top of the other, it's a '66 or later. Check the pan shape in the transquide I posted to determine whether it's a 727 or 904.

The part number is closer to the '65-'66 time frame so I'd guess it's a '66; both the 727 and 904 used a specific torque converter in that year, with the correct converter that trans will fit most anything from '66 on up.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
