Original paint?

Lizzy

Hi guys,

My 68 Charger started her life as a PP1 car. She was painted dark blue and later on she was given a kind of burgundy-reddish-brown paint.
When I removed this 2 layers with some fine grits waterproof sandpaper, I noticed that the original PP1 red paint is still underneath.
I would like to bring the original paint back, but it's really difficult because the paint is really thin and the sandpaper also removes small amounts of the original red paint.
Some help & good ideas how to make my Charger an 'original paint car' would be great!  ;D

I think you might have better luck turning a hamburger back into a cow ;D ;D

Seriousely, though...I don't think it can be done, as you have experienced already, it's too diffiucult to remove the other layers without damageing the base. plus that base was probably scuffed/sanded to get the subsequent layers to stick...

good luck, nice charger..

You can only be original once but you can restore you car over & over a 100 times. Your original paint is History, Kiss it goodby. Only thing you can do is repaint it original color. Or, just buy a original paint car like mine. LEON.

Lizzy

Leon... I'm afraid I don't have the money for that... maybe if I work till I'm 90 years old... and then I'm too old to drive my original paint Charger...  :rotz:
So we'll just keep this one  ;)

I know a 68 Charger should be black (triple black Chargers rule)... but I'm a fendertag-kind-a-girl, so I consider it a crime to spray a PP1 car black.  ;) (Wasn't always that freaky, but had some major fendertag-influenced friends  ::)  ;D)

My car is a Hamtramck car, then moved to Sacramento, Las Vegas, California, The Netherlands and now Belgium. I bought it in July from a guy in Tilburg (The Netherlands).

Although I'm not sure whether you could order a White Hat Special Charger in '68, my car has all the options that came with a White Hat Special package.
She's a 383 (not matching #s, I think it's a replacement engine) 4-barrel, a 727 tf automatic, Center Front Seat, Bucket Seats, Hood Mounted Turn Signal Indicators (not functional yet  :rotz:), Driver's Outside Remote Operated Mirror and it was a Sold Car When Built. She also has Power Brakes, had a AM Radio (now a cd-player),Tinted Windshield Only and a White Vinyl Top (not the original). AXLE: 3.23 Rear Axle Ratio, Deluxe Trim Grade, Vinyl Bucket Seats, White on Black Interior. Monotone Red Paint (not very red at the moment... ) and White Upper Door Frame Color. She came with 7.35 x 14 WSW Tires, but as you see, the real vintage Torq Thrust D's are all I have now (like we care...  ;)  ;D

Anything more you need to know?  :P  ;D

Yeah, NYCMILLE's '68 Charger is a beautiful car, that's for sure...
We're all Charger-lovers, so it doesn't really matter whether you're a matching #s-man (or woman) or a mod-person... We're all trying to keep as much Chargers alive as we can... and that's what matters, right?  ^-^

PS: If you like Black Chargers... check this one out (it's a no-triple black 70 Charger though  ;)):

HITMAN 149

Sorry, Wish I could be of more help. BUT, Being a Painter I know there is not much you can do to save that old paint if it's hiding under 2 repaints. The Factory only used 2 thin coats of Acrylic Enamel. Who knows what's on top of that with the repaints? You could try but I'm afraid the end results will not be pretty unfortunately. Any Chick that knows Mopar like you do is allright in my book ;) Good luck. LEON.

THE CHARGER PUNK

well looks so far being a non #'s match car so i say go anywhich route you want, my dads car was equipped like yours cept colours were yellow w/black top and int, this is it 2day with the popular black colour combo for the 68 now packing a 610hp stroked 440 :icon_smile_big:-MATT

altho pp1 with white on white is very unique and i dare say it............sexy :yesnod:, but then again what do i know im a teenage punk..a CHARGERPUNK :icon_smile_big:-MATT

Lizzy

Matt, is that your dad's car?  :o  Wish my father drove a Charger like that...  wish he drove a Charger... wish he liked my Charger...  ;D

I always thought a red '68 Charger with white vinyl top is kind of a classy car (sexy if you want  ;D), but I must admit the colour is not very important to me... as long as it's the colour that's on the fendertag  ;D

By the way.. Anyone else got some good ideas to bring my original paint back?

THE CHARGER PUNK

yeah thats my pops car we got for a steal less then 15k(engine wasnt running) ,but as hampton said the end result would look bad, is the engine compartment, trunk and door jams burgundy 2?

Lizzy

the engine compartment :the hood is blue & original paint red (where the isolation material was) (see picture)

trunk: burgundy and blue

door jams: or. paint red & some blue

on second thought... I'm gonna name my car Rainbow Brite ;D

bull

I wouldn't worry about it myself. I'd be damn glad there's no rust to deal with (if that's the case) and reshoot it. If you don't have any rust you're already light years ahead of most Charger owners.

Lizzy

Only a little rust on 2 quarter panels (especially right rear quarter panel), but I'm gonna have that fixed in the wintertime  :yesnod:

six-tee-nine

Hey lizz

Know you from MCH forum and i'm also Belgian.

First i wanna say head's up with the car she still looks nice i think and second do you mind telling me how many Euro's / dollars you paid for it?

Greetings from Belgium, the beer country

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

Lizzy

Ghoste

For the record Lizzy, you could get a White Hat Special in 1968.  I THINK (and I have to stress that because I'm no fender tag decoding expert by any stretch) the code would appear on the tag as a "1" under the "E" or "F".  The broadcast sheet should call it out as a 361.

Lizzy

Hmm... no 1 under the "E" or "F" on my fendertag...
I haven't got the broadcast sheet, so can't check that..  :-\

Ghoste

Well, like I said, I am NOT an expert.
What is on your fender tag?

Lizzy
