Hi Guys, got the motor pulled and time to paint the engine bay. The vin paint code says  GB5. Looking at the PPG 72 color chips , they show a B 5, Dark Blue Poly, which LOOKS like my color, question is , what does the G mean on the tag. Most all the paints were identified with one letter and number and the vin tags on all three of my chargers , 71,72,73 are listed with three digits.......thanks........J

Starting in 70, the paint code went to three characters. The first letter indicates what model year the paint color was first used. Chrysler's use of a letter to indicate a model year started over in 65 so A= model year 1965. E= 69, F= 70 G=71.

The "E" in EV2 means the color was first used in 1969. FC7 first used in 1970 and GB5 first used in 1971. The T in TX9 goes back to before the realignment of the model year and letter. The T indicates model year 1963 was the first year that shade of black was used. Not all letters are used (for example no "U" or "I")
Seeking information on '69 St. Louis plant VINs, SPDs and VONs. Buld sheets and tag pictures appreciated. Over 3,000 on file thanks to people like you.

Heres a little tip for you. Most people just call there B5 Blue Paint B5 Blue. But in Reality EB5 blue & GB5 blue are 2 different colors from 3 different years, 69/70 & 71. The 71 being darker then 69/70. I've seen many people confuse these 2 & paint there car the wrong color. LEON. :rotz:

Ahhhhh, the plot thickens, soooooooo what paint code do I tell the mixer to use to mix the GB5 color.  The 72 PPG chip page said the code is 2306.  Is this code going to be different from the B5 for a 69 or 70.    John

As long as you use the 71-72 GB5 blue & the related # given in the 71-72 Chip Book you should be OK. LEON :yesnod:
