Any electricians out there?

Hey guys. I was just wondering what you guys could make of this. It's in my little storage building thing, which has lighting and therefore electricity. However, there aren't any outlets in there at the time. What is this thing? Is it a spot where I could wire up an outlet? Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

sure looks like 220, at least a 10gauge too.  get a voltmeter and check it before you do anything.

it is just a junction box to take power somewhere else , if possible it would be better to run a separate pair of wires into the box & split them out to run lighting etc

Neil is right.  You don't want to just tap-off 120 volt from a 240 volt circuit.  You won't have the proper overcurrent protection and will be in violation of the NEC.  If you,ve got lights in there then there will be a way to find your proper 120 volt circuit.  Better yet, hire an Electrician.  Bob

If it's indeed 220v AND it's on it's own dedicated circuit, you could switch the wires to a 110v breaker in the main panel box.  that would turn what you pictured into a 110v junction box that you could easily run outlets off of.  However, from your pic, it looks like that box is feeding something.  dryer, a/c compressor, dishwasher...something with a heavy draw.

Like the man said, though, call a licenced electrician.  no need to burn your house down because you listened to someone on an internet message board.

I havn't gone back to look yet, but I'm pretty sure that box is just feeding the overhead lights in there. Maybe more, for the neighboring buildings?

   You might want to buy a 99 cent cover and put on that box also.

It all depends on how comfortable you are with your electrical skill. I'm assuming since you are asking this question you are questioning if you should mess with it... if there is any question in your mind it is better to be safe then sorry... call the electrician.

if you are like me and don't like to call people to do work you think you can do your self, I would call the electrician and then fallow him around and learn as much as you can from him... but I wouldn't mess with the wires with out understanding that was going on.

Follow those two conduits and see where they go. One should lead back to a circuit breaker panel, the other should go to a load of some kind like an appliance or lighting and receptacles. When you figure out what load is on it go to your circuit breaker panel and trip the breakers one at a time until you find the right one feeding the circuit. If it is a two pole breaker, meaning it has two handles connected together with a rod, it is a 220 volt circuit and untouchable. If you find single breakers of 20 amp rating or less than you can add on another outlet to the circuit, provided there isn't already to much stuff on it.
