Ok, I have several articles in Hot Rod and other magazines on the new Rhoads variable duration lifters.  They are supposed to lower the duration and lift of a hot cam at idle for better low end, and then restore the full duration and lift at the top end.  My question is can these lifters make more power with an oversized cam than say a cam that fits your combo?  Are they only used if you don't want to buy a smaller cam?  Just looking for a little feedback and want to see if anyone has used anything lilke them seeing as how my cam is too hot for my combo.

Basicly a bandaid for an overcammed engine combo. I prefer to size the camshaft accordingly rather than overcam and bleed off duration with a rhodes style lifter.  :yesnod:

Rhoads lifters aren't really a new concept are they? I thought they have been around quite awhile now. Pontiac guys seem to use them quite a bit from what I have read. They are supposed to be "noisy" but never heard them myself.

I have used rhodes lifters in the past. They give u the mechanical lifter sound. By just installing them I gained 20 ft lbs tork+25 hp under 3500 rpm it equalled out to about the same on the top end....1970   340   10.5  202-160 mp 284-484 cam, ld340 intake+ 1/58 headers. It pulled alot stronger off the line.  Helped idle quality a fair bit...........Would I use them again?...ABOSULTELY!!!..........OLDKIMMER
