Painting my '72 rallye - NOT stock style!

Alrighty - I FINALLY got my car dropped off at the body shop, and they're getting started on it now...  But I was chatting with the body shop guy, he was mentioning that if I didn't want to 'restore' it, he'd be happy to paint the 'decal' items like the door louvres and hood blackout...  but it occured to me - I've never really wanted to go for the stock setup anyway... So why not get creative?  So, thinking about the 'best' stripe setup I could come up with, I think I've decided to go with the following.  Basically, take the stock door louvres and hood blackout-

and do them in red.

Then, the one BIG thing I always thought was missing on the '72 striping options, the tail stripe:

So what do you think?  Black, eliminate the vynil roof, then do the hood 'blackout', door louvres, and tail stripe (as above, but without the 'r/t' cutout) in red... Kindof a dark red, almost burgandy... something like this color : http://www.cardomain.com/member_pages/show_image.pl?bg=FFFFFF&image=http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/1/web/2317000-2317999/2317910_1_full.jpg I think it should come out pretty sweet, no?

if youre repainting the car black like you said then yes a burgandy would make it POP.... but i am not a real big fan of the tail stripes on 3rd gens..... and the color combo is a reverse of what most would do... burgandy with black decals / striping so it will definitely be unique.....  but thats just my opinion....

Here's a good tail stripe for a 71/72, this or something like this was available when the car was new, but it was rare

What i think is that if you are going with a black body color, then a flat clear stripe would look very nice.  I can try an vision the burgundy over black and its just not doing it for me.  But the flat clear stripe and hood and door decals would be timeless.  Like this: :Twocents:

I have to disagree with PT. I've never liked the black on black treatment, but again this is all a matter of personal taste. See if you could get someone to photochop a pic of a black 3rd gen with a red tail stripe. It's your car, do what you want, but please not flames.

Ugh, no doubt, no flames!

I don't really like the black on black either...  and never really liked the 'tank tracks'...

I'll see if I can find somebody to photoshop, that's a great idea :)

I personally LOVE black stripes on black paint.  That looks wicked, and I'm probably doing the same to my '68.

Going black on black to ME is odd and a waste of time.  It's harder to see and looks like someone made a mistake.  But, hey that's the joy of personalizing your car. DO IT YOUR WAY, IT"S YOUR CAR!!!

I got a white one on my blue paint. Thought it wasn't original... now I'm happy to hear that it could have had that when new  :icon_smile_cool:

My wife walked in and said that that black Charger looks great with the flat black stripe....Was that too many that's? :icon_smile_approve:
Car's got a lot of pickup. It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?

if i ever have the money to paint my car, i personally dig the ghosted stripes. i want to do the car black, and ghost in a rear stripe. that strobe one looks wicked, never seen that before!

you know what ghost stripes are right? its like not really noticeable head on, but at an angle its slightly shimmering, like a grey or something..   ;D

IMO, the black 72 rallye chargers look great all black, no decals or stripes whatsoever, not even in the door depressions.  If I owned your car, the only thing that I would add is a black gull wing and the front chin spoiler. That's makes for one bada** as looking hotrod. The wing and the front spoiler balances the car out. Just an idea.
