Repro 71-72 R/T,500, Rallye tail light lenses.....not so great in my opinion.

I bought a set on ebay and got them today. At first glance they looked great. Upon  close inspection, I`m not so thrilled. Mine have quite a few stress fractures in them as well as some very fine cracks that do extend to the surface. They do have part numbers on them, but are missing the pentastar logo (not a problem with me)   The two i got are both for the left side. As most know, a left can be used on the right, but the part numbers will be upside down. I`m not sure if this was a mistake made on my order, or if they simply repro`d one lense and this is whatcha get (without being told) . I emailed the seller with my issues but havent got a response yet. Based on the lenses i got..... i don`t feel that they are worth the $375 + $25 shipping that they cost me. I`m not saying that they are junk...(like my PUI seat covers).... from 5 feet they look great.....just not the quality that i expected for what i paid.  I`ll try to get some pics up in the next couple days.....

that's the same price for the replacment '71 plymouth B-bod lenses... i wonder if the quality or lack of it is the same....

Thanks for the feedback. I've been wondering about them for the last few days.

This is what I wrote about the pair I bought:

QuoteJust received the repro taillight lenses and am very very happy with them.  I compared them side by side to an original pair and they are exact.  The colour, the way they fit in the bezels, and the markings were there (not the pentastar though).  Personally, the fact that they are new and look good is good enough for me.  I'm using them on my '72 SE so originality is not important.

They were packed very well and arrived in 4 business days (shipped and received within Canada).  I would definitely recommend them.

Mine have no stress marks or fine cracks, I will have to check if one has the part number upside down or not.  I had to stop torturing myself spending months scouring eBay and buying original lenses that probable aren't as durable as a 34 or 35 year set ( I purchased many sets which all had their problems).  I saw a single NOS lense go for $400+ the other day.  I figure with the bezels covering most of the lens and the fact that they are then installed in a bumper not too many people are going to know the difference.  I sold a set of NOS 72 SE taillight assemblies, which I used part of the money to buy these lenses.  I'm just glad I'm no longer involved in the '71/'72 R/T Rallye taillight craze.

I have about 10 of those.  Mine are all nice and are happy with it.  I think they look great.  However, it is only the one side.  It will fit but the numbers will be upside down.  Twilt...where is the stress crack?  Maybe they gave you a bad pair?  Tell them you aren't happy and get another one.

twilt

The most obvious stress crack is within one of the back up lenses. That caught my attention and i saw more when i held them up to a light. i was able to capture a pic of one of the stress cracks. its hard to get clear up close pics on lenses. one of the lenses that i thought was cracked.......upon further looking/feeling, i believe that there is a long hair embedded on the lense surface rather than a crack. regardless, I dont want a "hair-line" on the surface of my new lense.

CDN72SE, i did see your review of the lenses. It was the reason i went ahead and bought them.

Chargerkid, thanks for clarifying about the one side fits both lense. By doing that, they saved a lot of $$$ on tooling.

I have mixed feelings about them. Overall, they look pretty nice. However, the ones i got do have minor flaws and the seller should be up front about reproducing just one side.

CDN72SE

Twilt, I would definitely arrange to have the piece exchanged, especially for that type of money.  They seem to be pretty accomodating from the feedback and comments written about the company.

I guess they are going to do the other side too.

There are lots of new parts coming out for the 71-4 Chargers.

Brock..I have Plymouths too! ;D

On a similar note, as for the tail light housings...will any other housing work?  I noticed that the 72 SE housings look similar. A friend of mine has an extra set of bezels, but I would need the new lenses and housings to have a complete set.
Does anyone have an extra set of housings?

Hot rod..the 72 SE housings are totally different than the R/T Rallye 500 housings.

I'll get pictures of them thios weekend.

hotrod98

Thanks, looking forward to seeing them.
Gary42 and myself are both changing our taillights on our 3rd gen cars, his 72 rallye and my 74 hardtop and I don't remember what the 71-72 rallye housings looked like.

To clarify my previous post, The tail lights on Gary42's real 72 Rallye car were changed at some point in it's life and Gary's changing them back. As for me, I'm building a unique 74 charger hardtop that will look a lot like a 71. I have a 71 R/T hood, the door depressions to graft into the 74 doors and the bumper brackets to tuck the bumpers in. Now I need the grilles and tail lights from a 71. I want to build a nice driver. The reason that I'm using a 74 to do this is because I already have a real solid 74, but I like the style of some of the 71 parts.

I wish I could get hold of a reasonable set of used ones because there's a lens guy here in Australia that makes all our car club lenses - great work too.
