Off-duty officer shot in robbery attempt at speedway

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) -- An off-duty police officer was in critical condition Sunday night after being shot several times during an attempted robbery at Kansas Speedway.

A Kansas City Police Department spokesman said the female officer, a 25-year veteran of the force, was working security at the track during Sunday's NASCAR race.

Police said the officer was shot just after 8 p.m. during a robbery attempt at the track's ticket office vault. The officer, whose identity was not released, was airlifted to a nearby hospital with life-threatening wounds.

Police spokeswoman Elaine Moore said two suspects were taken into custody near the speedway soon after the shooting. She said police were looking for a possible third suspect after witnesses reported seeing three people in the area of the robbery.
