Hi ppl... some times when I starts the engine ( cold ) I heard some rough-grinding-scratching metal noise, JUTS WHILE STARTER MOTOR makes the turn to start. My engine has a practically perfect starts on with just one or two, maybe three turns starter motor with engine cold. Then everything is normal, except some times I heard tappets sound for 2 seconds or less that looks are dischaged on that moment, but the tappet noise looks a bad quality oil that on an oil shop added when changed.

I can't say if is related with starter motor or inside the engine, because when sounds I notice also how engine   looks to be pushed to spining rotation side.

Sounds weird... doesn't ?

might be a few things  but if it is only when turning the key to start it might be a chipped /worn teeth on the starter ring gear on the torque converter  , to check this remove the starter  and look for any damaged teeth , by rotating the crank by hand , it only needs 2-3 teeth to be  damaged to give this problem   could even be a real  loose starter motor, it is hard to diagnose a sound unless you hear it  1st hand

the starter could be too close to the ring gear too which could require offset dowel piuns to correct

myk

So, the starter is adjustable in its location then?  I just replaced my starter a coupla' weeks ago and now I've got grinding every once in a while, especially on a restart with a hot engine; I did not have any problems with the previous starter...

the starter is not really adjsutable , there is a slight amount of play , you need to correct the whole trans to engine alignment sometimes with offset dowel pins
