Good question.  I know that they blew the engine in the last TA before filming was done, rented a Camaro and did a temporary engine swap to finish it.

all the original bandit cars were sold right after filming ended.. to a local dealership in north louisiana.. the cars were then sold off as normal used banged up t/a's. well after a spell WB decided they didn't want to risk legal problems later. so through the dealership they tracked down every owner of the bandit t/a's and bought them back, sometimes higher prices, others took a new one as payment or trade if you will.. but they did get every single car back. then they were all disposed of, and thus NONE survived.. not the 77's anyway.. no idea what happened to the semi

The original bandits were 76's converted to look like 77's according to the info I have read. The movie was produced prior to the '77 model year. In the scene where Burt is parked outside Texarkana, Texas you can clearly see the '76 honeycomb wheels instead of the snowflake's. There were supposedly some 455 4 speeds used for the stunt scenes.

i am not discrediting that they COULD have used a 76 or 2, anything was possible back then, but since 76's didn't come with ttops, i highly doubt all the bandit cars were 76's.. before 77 those ttops weren;t   even offered on a trans am, so how would they have even known how to make it look right? i personally think they had access to 77's early, just as sometimes movie companies get some of the first new models even today for movies

I am just going off what the Trans Am guys have reported on their websites. The T tops were installed in 643 1976 SE's.

They should be called the Hurst "Open" Hatch because they leak even when it isn't raining.  ;)

Burt traded the car for a six-pack when he was drunk.  He admitted it when he was drunk another time during "Bandit II."

Isn't that inaccurate? IIRC, they left the car and took fat head's Caddy, leaving both the truck and car behind at the end.

That is how the 1st movie ended but in the 2nd movie the storyline was something along the lines of what MikeDC mentioned. I think he called the new car Son of Trigger. I don't care for any of the sequels but the first movie was great.

There was one or several 76' used with 77 sheetmetal as mentioned.  The hurst roofs were available in 76.  Not real common, but available.  The 76 was the last year for the 455 and the "honeycomb" wheels.  The 77's had "snowflakes" instead.
