What size wire to use for welding body/patch panels?

I think it's time for me to start thinking about practicing welding body panels, so what size wire do I use in the mig welder?  I have a couple of honda fenders a friend gave me to practice on so I figure that if I can get the new thin metal down I should be pretty good to go on the thicker older stuff - and that is supposing I can get me a parts car instead of buying repoped panels...

.023 solid wire and use the gas.  Stay away from flux core wire.
