I've read from guys that did the heat and scrape method but I hade no interest in trying that. The needle scaler is loud and dusty but quite effective.
I have a thing with fire though. I don't like it. I wouldn't call it a phobia, I'm just not too comfortable with fires.

There are several things I don't like about scraping...
1. the heat on the sheetmetal
2. dropping molten hot pieces of melted undercoating on your neck/face or down your sleeve.
3. how slow it goes

A propane torch shouldn't be harmful to the metal if you're not getting the metal much warmer than you can stand to touch by hand.
I just don't like fire.   
I'd rather use the scaler. I keep the angle low to scrape rather than to dent!

The engine bay has been painted and I'm so glad I bit the bullet and had it done. The "survivor" engine bay left alot to be desired.

My paint guy touched up where the undercoating was disturbed for the transmission crossmember, 4 link, and subframe connectors.

The outside of the inner fenders also received raptor liner.
