I drove my car to Carlisle in '12. 1,000-ish miles round trip. Black on black and no a/c was a little uncomfortable in the July heat.

The brick was in the car when I bought it. I don't know why Tom left it in the car.

DAY CLONA

When I restore an "old" vehicle, it's completely gone thru with quality parts and workmanship, so I have no issues with long haul trips, I took my 1970 Daytona down to the Year One meet from Massachusetts to Florida, drove 1500 miles non stop (other than gas stops) ran 70 to 100+ mph the entire way in about 20 hrs straight...hit the show, then the road course track, tore up the track, did a photo shoot for a magazine, then drove home another 1500 miles non-stop (again other than gas stops)....and a few HotRod Power tours over the years avg about 4000+ miles round trip, I only had one break down on a Power Tour when my "big buck professional" resto alternator seized a bearing as it couldn't take the extended high RPM and hours of running, luckily I had a small tub of spare parts in the trunk (starter/alt/coil/belts/oil/filter/etc) to do a quick road side swap

That is great.
If you have the money to go through everything on the car, that does help. I know that I've spent some money on stuff and also reused some old stuff too. I don't have an unlimited amount of money so some things are still original. I haven't replaced wiper bushings or pivot seals in my car and they are original. They keep working.

Nacho, when you took it on the road trip I bet it was very attention getting..

Sure... in fact in one of them I was with a really pretty friend of mine and while I was on a gas station filling the tank she kept into the car waiting and heard one guy saying "look that hottie girl" and his friend told after that, FORGETT THE CHICK, LOOK AT THE CAR!

(She heard those comments and laugh, then she told me)

LOL.

Back in about 1989-90 I drove my 71 on a 900 mile round trip back home for a family reunion. Was my only vehicle then.

Then about 5-6 yrs later my van was acting up during a major job change and I had to drive my 71 prolly 700 miles round trip back to class after completing on the job training at home.

You should drive it to Carlisle.

I'd like to reduce some of the road noise in mine. I get this way after a road trip. I often feel frazzled and overstimulated like you'd get after running a chain saw or jack hammer for several hours.
It isn't the tires. The floor has sound deadener matting and carpet. I have a complete interior.
Sometimes windows UP or down, the noise is a lot to take. I suspect the engine is a large part of it. I have a big solid lifter cam that does create a lot of engine noise. Underhood, there is a huge difference between this car and others with milder hydraulic camshafts. I've considered stepping down from this cam so maybe this may be one way to kill 2 birds with one stone.

Again, the road noise does wear on me after awhile. Newer cars sure were built with a greater emphasis on reducing interior noise.
Maybe though...I haven't had a car with a totally stock engine and single exhaust system in years. Maybe a stock car is a lot quieter on the road than the cars I'm used to driving.
A slant six Valiant with single exhaust may be a lot quieter than mine even without sound deadening mats.
How much noise is trapped in the roof? That is the only place that I don't have any of the matting because I wasn't willing to remove the headliner to do it.

Just last weekend did the longest road trip in the 69. Rio Vista, CA to Fallon, NV. About 500 miles roundtrip. Stopped by Summit Racing in Sparks, NV on the way.

Kern Dog

Hey...Are you the guy that I gave a steering box to years ago? I'm in Granite Bay. Didn't we also see each other in Antioch around 2020 when Daryl sold me a heater box for Jigsaw?

ca 69charger

Hi Kern Dog, sorry wasn't me. My name is Larry. Maybe there is another B5 charger running around in my part of the woods.

Kern Dog

Hmm, okay. The other guy is named Aaron.
Thanks!

I bought my 68 Charger RT in Sept 2012.  It had been in storage for 20 years.  I drove it out of storage 30 miles to my house (actually original owner drove it for last time) with a leaky rear wheel cylinder.  He had stored it w/ race gas.  The leak stopped (silicone brake fluid).  I replaced the rubber fuel lines and changed the belts before driving 7655 miles on the Power Tour in May/June of 2013.  Norcal to Baton Rouge in 2 days then back to Arlington to start the  PT.  Changed oil along Power Tour and won and installed a Holley EFI kit in Birmingham, AL.  Drove from Charlotte to BR to Norcal in 3 days.  EFI only got 0.6 mpg more than carb. Dyno'd it in Dallas and was part of the largest burnout in Charlotte.  That was Fun!!!

 A couple more from Charlotte

110 miles one way shortly after I purchased it unrestored 34 years ago, it was a little rough around the edges.

More recently, longest is about 60 miles round trip.

In no particular order...why I don't road trip my car.

A) I hate cleaning off jillions of bugs.
B) Deer, Semi's, birds, etc.
C) Bad weather.  I worked too hard on it to get caught in a hailstorm or whatever.
D) Unnecessary mileage + wear and tear on parts.
E) Anywhere really interesting or desirable where I'd want to take my car is a minimum of 6 hours of driving through blah on marginal roads.  Screw that.

I trust my car...it's 100% good to go with nice upgrades and has never left me stranded.

Kern Dog

See, letters D and E are disappointing to read from a car guy.
Wear and tear? So what? Would you take this same theme to your house? I don't want to walk on the carpet or use the shower, I'll have to address wear and tear. Would you quit having sex with your wife to keep her OEM and pristine?
Letter E: Why would you live so far away from anything worth seeing?

I got my '69 from a guy in Salt Lake City, via an ebay auction.  My friend an I drove from Salem Oregon to Salt Lake City in a truck (with an A frame hitch and extra oil, tranny fluid etc etc) on a Saturday, then he followed me driving it back from Salt Lake City to Salem all day Sunday.  We went via I-84 and I-5, approximately 820 miles. Although I had seen a ton of them, I had never actually driven any muscle car.

The car had front seats out of a Hyundai, no seat belts, no working turn signals, no license plates, no muffler (440/727 with a pipe back to about the front seat area just flopping around), no carpet, a tick in the engine, was dripping gas from the gas tank, and had worn out unmatched wheels and tires at every corner.

The first stop light I hit in Salt Lake City, I took off and there was a clang sound, and my buddy called me and said nuts and bolts were falling off the car! (we later found out this was the aft tranny mount breaking and hardware falling out...)

Made it home in about 18 hours, only stopped for gas 2 or 3 times (it had 2.76 rear gears), added oil twice, and I had an ear to ear grin the entire trip!  (and literally the next day on the way to register it at the DMV, it broke down... (I quickly learned about ballast resisters...)

For me is was a recent trip up to Barrie Ontario, not really that far compared to most of these, at 200km each way. but it highlighted something that i didnt really notice with the shorter drives, the total lack of lumbar support on the stock style seats. my back was sore way faster than expected. On the way back i picked up some clip on lumbar pillows, but they didnt really do enough. I may have to start looking into a seat swap eventually lol.
