clutch pedal spring 71 charger

hey guys  i bout to put the spring on the clutch pedal under the dash  but notic that if on the pedal will be held to the floor  i grabed the pedal and raised up  higher i go the futher away from the spring hook it gets  there is no way the pedal will stay up...... there is nothen bolted to the back of the motor    but souldnt the pedal stay up on its own??? need  help   ralph

once the spring is on it will over center & stay up , the clutch pushes the pedal up most of the way & the last inch or so it handled by going overcenter
